Hi all,
My name is Joey Rawlings; I've been a Calvert resident for my entire life, been a member of the Prince Frederick Volunteer Rescue Squad for almost 15 years, and work at Leonardtown High School as a computer support specialist. As you can see, I've been on the SOMD.com forums for a while now, but been a lurker, so I figured I'd say hi.
With the introductions out of the way
, I wanted to let everyone know that I'm participating in a nationwide fundraiser for Children's National Hospital (formerly Johns Hopkins Childrens Hospital) on November 7th called "Extra Life" and I'm looking for any individual or business sponsors. This is my 3rd year doing the fundraiser and would like to 'test the waters' to see if I can captain a Southern Maryland team next year.
The story, inspiration, and explanation of the Extra Life fundraiser can be viewed here. I'd strongly urge everyone to watch this video to fully understand the reason for the fundraiser. The way that this fundraiser works is people sponsor me to play games for an entire day 24 hours straight; board games, video games, mobile app games - basically I'm 'playing' a marathon for sick kids that can't. The concept is similar to the Jump Rope for Heart events at elementary schools - sponsor the participant, participant does something, and all sponsorship donations go to an organization that uses it for good.
My original goal in 2013 was $100, but thankfully, I tobliterated that in two days of cross-promoting on Facebook and Twitter, by the end of the campaign, I just barely made $1,000. In 2014, I broke the $1,000 mark. This year, I'm setting my initial goal at $1,500 with all intentions to raise even more.
