TX GOP Platform

Sorry about that chief.
You know you love it!

Religious Freedom

* "The Republican Party of Texas affirms that the United States of America is a Christian nation."

* "Our Party pledges to exert its influence to restore the original intent of the First Amendment of the United States Constitution and dispel the myth of the separation of Church and State."

* The 2004 party platform opposes efforts to restrict display of the Ten Commandments and other religious symbols in government buildings and other places maintained by tax dollars.

Civil/Equal Rights

* Republicans state that it should be a felony to issue a marriage license to a same-sex couple "and for any civil official to perform a marriage ceremony for a same-sex couple."

* Defining marriage as a "God-ordained, legal and moral commitment only between a natural man and a natural woman," the platform supports a federal constitutional amendment that bans same-sex marriage and opposes "granting of benefits to people who represent themselves as domestic partners without
being legally married."

* The platform opposes hate-crime laws (which increase penalties for crimes that target people based on hatred for their religion, race, sexual orientation and other characteristics).

* The platform supports "covenant marriage" (which endangers battered spouses because it would allow couples to divorce only after a waiting period and counseling, even in cases of domestic abuse) and advocates rescinding no-fault divorce laws.

* The platform condemns homosexuality, supports criminalizing sexual relations between consenting adults of the same sex and calls on Congress to "withhold jurisdiction from the federal courts from cases involving sodomy" (an implicit criticism of last year's U.S. Supreme Court's ruling that overturned sodomy laws).

* The platform opposes the adoption of children or foster parenting by gay men and lesbians.

* The party supports laws that bar Child Protective Services from
removing an abused child from his or her home, even in cases of "immediate danger to the child's physical health or safety."

* The platform calls for requiring people who report child abuse to identify themselves and their contact information.

* The state party platform calls for a ban on stem-cell research (which experts believe holds the promise of cures for a variety of diseases like Parkinson's and Alzheimer's).

Public Education

* The party calls for schools to emphasize "Judeo-Christian principles" and for including Bible-based "theories" like "intelligent design" about the origin of humans in science textbooks.

* Republicans support health education that promotes abstinence from sex "until heterosexual marriage with an uninfected person" and oppose any other instruction on methods of preventing pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases.

Pornography

* The Party believes, as do the vast majority of Texans, that pornography is repulsive, addictive and contributes to deviant criminal behavior. It exploits men, women, and children and degrades society as a whole. We call upon our governmental bodies to enforce existing laws regarding all forms of pornography in our music, film, telephone, computer, video, cable, satellite, television, radio, Internet, and print industries. We must have more stringent legislation to prohibit access to and generation of pornography including virtual pornography and operation of sexually–oriented businesses.

*We support the efforts of Attorney General John Ashcroft in working with Congress on creating appropriate legislation and applaud his efforts at protecting our children and society.

Yeah, this is disturbing. This sort of sentiment that the Texas GOP has displayed is the major reason that I could never see myself as a Republican.

Sorry about that chief.
They did have some good points in there.

But since the majority on this board luv to point out the wicked liberals by pointing to a crazy few I figured I'd point to the party (and state) of our current CIC and the crazy stuff THEY have.

"The Republican Party of Texas affirms that the United States of America is a Christian nation."

America has freedom of religion and separation of church and state, but America was founded on Christian values. As long as they keep religion out of law I dont care.....but wait isn't "thou shall not kill" based on religion, should we rethink that law about murder? How many times does the Declaration of Independance and the Constitution mention God?

The 2004 party platform opposes efforts to restrict display of the Ten Commandments and other religious symbols in government buildings and other places maintained by tax dollars.

Even if your not a Christian they are pretty good rules to live by.

Republicans state that it should be a felony to issue a marriage license to a same-sex couple "and for any civil official to perform a marriage ceremony for a same-sex couple."

Well its currently not a national issue, so any state is free to do that if they wish. It should not be a federal issue either.

The platform opposes hate-crime laws (which increase penalties for crimes that target people based on hatred for their religion, race, sexual orientation and other characteristics).

Thats because its often abused and used when it shouldn't be. I mean murder is already illegal, so is assult and battery. Why should the reason play in effect? That to me contradicts separation of church and state that the democrats are so quick to point out. Isn't one free to hate? Sorry the act is the crime not the reason. Is murdering someone to rob them any less of a tragedy than murdering someone because you dislike their race, creed, or sexual orientation? I should hope not.

The platform calls for requiring people who report child abuse to identify themselves and their contact information.

Its right to face your accusor, it keeps people from using the law to settle a personal vendetta, much like how the hate crime laws can be abused.

These are the "issues" that I agree with. I didn't reply to the ones I don't agree with or simply could care less about.

I've heard the "Christian values" claim too many times and I don't buy it. Half the Ten Commandments are specific Judeo/Christian doctrine. Besides, at one time in the US, "Christian values" including things like banning Jews from country clubs.

I admit I don't go to church so I could be wrong but that wasn't Christian values that was people using religion to justify their hatred. Notice I said as long as they keep church out of laws.

The religious nuts are what probably keeps me out of the Republican party btw.

Now, now. Democrats believe in God, too. They just don't want to be reminded of it unless someone is recording a sound bite.

Well, Christianity and Americanism aren't the same thing. Or, they aren't supposed to be.

Read it...Liked it.

The principles that the platform is built on are things like morality, Christianity, Justice, tradition, integrity...all things our Founders would have applauded.

It is only confused, embittered chip-on-the-shoulder Liberals who foam and quiver when reading it and shrink from it...calling it ignorant. Well, that "ignorance" has kept us going since 1776.
If we tried your version: we wouldn't last a decade.
