Here at Southern Maryland Online, some of our fondest childhood memories are of summer camp, so we've compiled a list of daycamps and sleepaway camps that are convenient to the area. But you'd better hurry - camp rosters fill up fast!

We'll list camp information as we receive it, and you can also see camps at our dedicated Summer Camp section.

STEM science camps to explore land, air and ice

The James E. Richmond Science Center will host several science summer camps from June through August for students in grades four through eight interested in keeping their STEM knowledge sharp. Three sessions are available for registration; the cost of each session is $245 per week with a one-time, nonrefundable registration fee of $40 per student. Early bird registration is $225 per week if completed by June 1.

All sessions run from 7:45 a.m. to 3 p.m. and campers will have to bring their own lunch. Transportation will not be provided. All sessions will include a daily swim period, with activities for students who do not want to swim. Swimmers will need to bring their bathing suit and towel. Snacks and water will be provided during each session. Before care is available for $10 per day and starts at 7 a.m.

The following is session information:

• June 20 to June 24 — Expedition Earth — Students will learn more about the Earth’s systems and how they interact with each other. The camp will feature “Dynamic Earth” in the center’s digital theater. Students will see real-time weather data on the Science on a Sphere, explore the area’s wetlands and geology, have volcano races, build a weather station and create weather such as snow, clouds, tornadoes and lightning.

• June 27 to July 1 — Polar Explorer — Students will explore Antarctic terrain with robots, communicate like penguins and complete an Arctic maze to take home. The camp will feature “Wonders of the Arctic” in the digital theater. There will be real-time snow and ice data on the Science on a Sphere, penguin communication games, building robots for an Antarctic terrain and making liquid nitrogen or dry ice ice cream.

• Aug. 22 through Aug. 26 — Up, Up and Away! The Science of Flight — Due to the popularity of last year’s camp, it is making a comeback. Students will learn about the theories of flight and construct several items that can fly, from a basic paper airplane to a hot air balloon. Activities include a viewing of “Dream to Fly” in the digital theater, exploring flight patterns on the Science on a Sphere and digitally built gliders and rockets.

Registration for Recreation and Parks Summer Camps Now Available

Leonardtown, MD – Parents … now’s the time to register your kids for one of Recreation and Parks’ 2016 Summer Camps. Over 30 camps are available for children and youth ages 3 – 20. Registration is available online and in person.

Summer Fun Day Camps begin the week of June 20 and run for one week sessions through August 12. All Summer Fun Day Camps are $135 unless specified; $170 and $200. Fun Camps run Monday through Friday 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Camp Keepers (extended care) is available from 6:30 - 8:30 a.m. and 4 – 6 p.m. for $15.00 per session (am or pm) per week. Summer Fun Day Camp locations include the Hollywood, Carver, and Leonard Hall Recreation Centers, as well as Elms Beach and Chancellors Run Regional Park.

Two Therapeutic Camps, New Horizons and Camp Inspire, are being offered at Lexington Park Elementary School, Monday through Thursday. Camp Inspire is a 4-week camp designed specifically for children diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). New Horizons is a 5-week fun filled adventure for children with various disabilities.

Sports Camp opportunities begin on June 20 and continue through August 4. Choose from 13 different sports camps ¬for ages 5 and up. Camp times, location, and price will vary depending on the camp. Full payment is due at time of registration.

Recreation and Parks is offering Camp Limbo for the three days between the last day of school and the first day of camp; June 15 - 17. Camp Limbo will operate 6:30 a.m. – 6 p.m. for $30.00 per day at Carver Recreation Center.

Community Services Announces Summer Camp Opportunities

The Charles County Department of Community Services is pleased to announce upcoming summer camps:

Summer Camp
Fill your child’s summer with fun activities and games at this special camp on weekdays from Monday, June 20 to Friday, July 29. Your child, ages 6-14, will love arts and crafts, fun sport competitions, organized games, a trip to the local pool, and a new special event or field trip each week from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The fee is $125 per week for residents and $130 for non-residents. Before or after care is $40, or before and after care is $50. Locations include William B. Wade Elementary (2300 Smallwood Drive West, Waldorf), John Hanson Middle School (3165 John Hanson Drive, Waldorf), Matthew Henson Middle School (3535 Livingston Road, Indian Head), and Milton Somers Middle School (300 Willow Lane, La Plata).

Camp Co-Op
This camp is designed for Charles County students, ages 5-21, with significant cognitive delay from Monday, June 20 to Friday, July 29. Activities include arts and crafts, swimming, games, sports, life skills, and special field trips. Camp operates for six one-week sessions. During the first three weeks, inclusion children will be enrolled into camp. Door-to-door transportation is available at designated areas based on need. Registration required. Fee is $185 per week.

Campnastics
Your child, ages 6-14, can jump, run, dance, and play all summer at Elite Gymnastics from Monday, June 20 to Friday, Aug. 19. Gymnastic instruction will be provided for vault, ropes, trampoline, bars, dance, balance beam, and the outrageous “pit.” Camp offers a weekly field trip and visit to the pool. The fee is $145 for residents and $150 for non-residents.

Registration for summer camps begins on Wednesday, March 2. There are many special summer camps available, including Brick Inspiration Lego Camp and Art Camp. Trying to line up activities to keep your children busy during the long, lazy days of summer? The Calvert Marine Museum (CMM) has some great options with summer camps for children entering first through tenth grade, led by our trained educators and docents. Pirates & Scallywags
July 4 - 8; 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
Ahoy, Mates! Come join our scallywag crew. For this week-long camp, you wear pirate garb, eat pirate grub, and do pirate work. Hunt for hidden treasure; stage a sea battle in the museum’s land-locked bugeye; swab the deck and sing sea chanteys with Captain Kevin. Come climb aboard to learn about local pirates, and in the final day sail the high seas of the Patuxent River with your parents on the skipjack Dee of St. Mary’s. Arrrgh! Critter Camp
July 18 – 22; 9:00 am - 1:00 pm
Come discover the critters that we have right in our back yard. We’ll make bug kites, spy on fiddler crabs, and create a small a garden for our critter friends. We will spend a day at Cypress Swamp walking on the wetland boardwalk and learning to ‘see’ nature. Get a special behind-the-scenes look at our River to Bay exhibit where our animals are cared for, and watch an aquarist do a feeding. The final day, board the Wm. B. Tennison with your parents for a lunch time cruise on the Patuxent River followed by an ice cream sundae. FEE: $110.00/CMMS members $95.00.

Guardians of the Estuary
July 11 – 15; 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Paddle, wade, hike, and sail our local waterways! Discover what’s living out there. Explore how the animals interact in their world, and how our actions affect them. How can we become Guardians of the Estuary? Plan to get muddy and creative as we canoe, collect, and search for a model estuary ecosystem. Once we find it, we’ll map it and develop a plan to protect it.
FEE: $135.00/CMMS members $120.00.

The Exhilaration of Otters
August 1 – 5; 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
You might love otters, but how well do you really know them? Join us to get up close and personal with our resident river otters. Explore otter adaptations to the local habitat and find out how river otters compare to otters around the world. Investigate how otters communicate; enjoy a canoe ride in their habitat; use your knowledge to design enrichment activities for our otters to enjoy! This camp includes two offsite field trips to local nature preserves, hiking, and canoeing to see a wetland habitat from an otter point of view. The last day of camp includes a river cruise for the whole family on the Wm. B. Tennison. FEE: $135.00/CMMS members $120.00.

Build Your Own Canoe (CMM Members Only)
June 27 – July 2; 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Boating Safety Course to follow
Build a real boat you can take home! Members of the Patuxent Small Craft Guild will teach you to make your own 12-foot plywood canoe. You will master basic woodworking and finishing skills to make a boat that you can enjoy for years to come. Learn sailing skills when commanding radio-control model sailboats in the boat basin and practice some of the maritime skills needed to catch crabs during a cruise on the drake tail work boat. We’ll take a break from boat building with a lunch cruise with your family members on the Wm. B. Tennison. At the Grand Finale on Saturday, you and the other campers will race your new canoes on the Patuxent River. Your family and friends are encouraged to cheer you on at our regatta and celebrate with awards.

Boating Safety Course (Dates TBD)
Students enrolled in this course have a guaranteed spot in a one-week session of the Spirit of America Boating Safety Course for middle school students, run by St. Mary’s College of Maryland & the Sailing Center Chesapeake and sponsored by the National Water Safety Congress and the Spirit of America Foundation. Participants who successfully complete the course and pass the test will receive the State of Maryland Safe Boating Card. Registrations are handled separately. CMM Jr. Paleontologists
July 5 – July 9; 9:00 am - 3:00 pm
Become a junior paleontologist, and hunt local beaches for fossil shark teeth, whale bones, and the shells of ancient snails and clams. Work with our professional paleontologists to uncover the mysteries of these ancient animals and the environments in which they lived. Learn collecting techniques and how to properly preserve your specimens. Keep a field journal, complete with your own drawings and observations. Take a tour of the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory at Jefferson Patterson Park. On Saturday, invite your family along for a river cruise on the Wm. B. Tennison. The final day of camp is Sharkfest, when you can share what you’ve learned with a display set up in the Harms Gallery. FEE: $135.00/ CMMS members $120.00. Location: Cove Point Lighthouse/Calvert Marine Museum.

JPPM Archaeology Explorers
July 11 - 15; 9:00 am - 4:00 pm
Have you ever wanted to be an archaeologist? Spend a week with archaeologists excavating for artifacts at the 18th century Smith St. Leonard site. Work alongside curators and conservators learning to clean, study, and preserve artifacts at the Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory (MAC Lab). Learn how archaeologists put all the pieces together to tell stories of the past. FEE: $135.00/Friends of JPPM $120.00. Jr. Docent Boot Camp
July 5 – 9
Have you ever wanted to work in a museum? – this is a great way to learn what’s involved. Becoming a museum Jr. Docent involves a two-year commitment from middle school students to learn how to be museum docents. The program kicks off with a week long summer “boot camp” where each cohort gets initiated into the workings of a museum. Application materials are available at www.bit.ly//2016SummerCamps and are due no later than May 1. Applicants will be contacted after May 5th for a face-to-face interview.
FEE: $25 to cover materials, badge, and volunteer shirt.

Entering Grades 9 – 10
Dee Sailing Camp
July 25 – July 29; 8:30 am – 4:00 pm
Spend a week exploring what is above and below the surface of the Patuxent River and Chesapeake Bay from the deck of our skipjack, the Dee of St. Mary’s. Participants in this camp will spend five days aboard the Dee of St. Mary’s learning to prep the boat, sail, and navigate. Dredge for oysters, collect and identify fish in a trawl, and measure water quality. Participants will also visit an oyster hatchery and see Chesapeake Bay animals up close as we examine the ways humans impact our local wildlife. FEE: $260.00/CMMS members $250.00

Summer Camps here at MGMB are always amazing-- creative, hands on, incredibly fun and one of a kind! So, this is a summary of the camps for this summer! More information will follow! Each camp has a four and five day option for campers, as well as part (9:30-2) and full (8:30-5:30) day options. Fliers will be available in the weeks to come.

Big Kid Camp
Fee (ages 5-12): $135, supplies and activity book $25
Extended Camp Fee: M-F, 8AM-5PM, $250; includes archery, swimming, miniature golf, table tennis, open art, and more.

Story of the World- International Legend and Lore
June 13-16

Explore the native cultures of the world through folk tales, art, music, games, and cooking! Our days will include imitating the art of Paul Gauguin and Frederic Remington, creating beautiful Tiki masks and African Masai necklaces, hula dancing, and lots of unusual games. We will make a variety of international food each day, including Hawaiian monkey bread, Ethiopian Easter bread, and Jollof rice. We’ll learn lots of fun folktales and enjoy a captivating performance by phenomenal storyteller and Smithsonian scholar, Diane Macklin. It's a winner for sure!

Around the World in Tasty Days!
June 27-30

This camp was so much fun last summer that we decided to do it again focusing on India, Polynesia, Spain, and Greece! Envision a day as Spanish paella simmers on the stove and the aroma of fresh baked empanadas fill the air, while your child creates a Picasso masks and paints Dali-like surreal animals, followed by a live Flamenco dance performance by Anna Menendez, trained in Spain and winner of the DC Arts Fellowship for excellence! All week, we will be listening to international music as we cook exotic foods, create art, and play games from around the world! This camp is jam-packed with nonstop excitement!

Build It!
July 11-14

Your camper will get their creative juices running and refine their engineering skills as they design and build bridges, catapults, and boats (yes, we will have boat races!) at the Build It! Camp. Guided by a professional Lego robotics team, they will build and program robots (challenge level personalized to each child) to play soccer! We will study the amazing feats and disastrous follies of engineers and learn about great architecture that is also art. In addition to listening to edgy classical music, we will compose music using cool technology. To keep us energized, we’ll build some incredible sandwiches (think kabobs, wraps, toasted, and even homemade ice cream sandwiches) and work it off with a very unusual set of Olympic games!

Wilderness Super Safari!
July 25-28

Would you like to pet a Burmese python? A boa constrictor? A komodo dragon? A great week awaits you as we create animals with clay, paint and paper mache, meet, hold and learn crazy facts about exotic animals, and listen and learn about music inspired by animals! But it doesn't stop there. . .let's study the finer points of photography as we go on a photo safari and learn about bacteria and biology as we do some gross science (yuck!). Super scrumptious snacks like edible aquariums and turtle burgers are also on the list of fun and educational activities.

You won't want to miss this camp . . .it's gonna be wild!

A Trip to Treasure Island
August 1-4

A world of mermaids, pirates, whales and ships await us as we go on a trip to Treasure Island! Prepare yourself for a visit from a real live 16th-century pirate, participate in a pirate treasure hunt, and cool off with super fun water games. We will learn about marine life, listen to sea shanties, and build regattas to race! Sea inspired snacks will keep us energized as we create seashell seahorses, striking sand art, cool coral reefs, and tinkling sea chimes. We'll top it off with a trip to Solomon's Island for swimming and water slides!

St. Mary's Co. Public Schools Summer Activities Registration Is Open

LEONARDTOWN --- St. Mary's County Public Schools is pleased to announce the registration period is now open for the 2016 Summer Activities. Registration for the summer programs began on April 1, 2016, and will remain open until May 27, 2016. Cyber Camp

The first annual Cyber Camp gives students in rising grades 7 and 8 the opportunity to learn about the growing field of cyber security using fun hands-on and interactive activities. Attendees will learn and apply basic concepts of programming, forensics, and cryptography, from a series of gaming, modeling, and simulation activities, which explore the interconnections of science, math, technology, and computers. Cyber Camp will run July 18 - 21, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. at the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center.

Spanish/French Camp

Foreign language camp for students in rising grades 2 - 6 provides elementary students the opportunity to experience learning a foreign language through an immersion environment using fun activities such as songs, role playing, and interactive games. Spanish/French Camp will run June 20 - 23, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. at Leonardtown High School.

Summer Space Camp

Space Camp for students entering grades 2 - 11 provides opportunities for students to participate in hands-on, minds-on activities in the areas of science, mathematics, technology, and engineering. Students will explore topics such as Earth Science, Engineering, Rocketry, Space Citizenship, and Space Science through classroom activities. Space Camp will run July 11 - 14, 2016, or July 18 - 21, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m. at the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center. Students in grades 7 - 11 may register for both weeks.

Summer Arts Academy

Summer Arts Academy for rising students in grades 4 - 9 give students the opportunity to explore multiple topics in the arts such as band, strings, theatre, dance, and art. The Summer Arts Academy will run June 20 - 23, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at Leonardtown High School.

Tech Kids Summer Camp

Tech Kids Summer Youth Enrichment Program for students ages 8 - 14 provides students the opportunity to explore various skills from engineering to culinary skills. Students can register for the all-day course, Stop Motion Animation, or for 2 of the other half-day sessions. Tech Kids Summer Camp will run July 11 - 14, 2016, from 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. at the Dr. James A. Forrest Career and Technology Center.

All-Day Session:

Stop Motion Animation (ages 10 - 14): Bring your toy cars, dolls, Legos and other objects to life in stop motion videos. Come to camp with creative, fun ideas and the toys/objects you want to bring to life. Give your videos sound with voice acting and Garage Band. Bring a thumb/USB drive or SD card with you each day so you can take the videos home.

Half-Day Sessions:

Roots, Shoots, Buckets and Boots (ages 8 - 12): Find out how seeds and plants grow. Build a Bloom and Bug to see how pollination works and how veggies are created (and used for eating)!

Engineering for Kids (ages 8 - 12): Build, test, and challenge! This class will be full of fun hands-on activities! From tasty marshmallow blasters, gumdrop tower challenges, paper airplanes and launchers, and egg drop droppers! Join in and get psyched about engineering!

Arts and Crafts (ages 8 - 12): Design and create fun arts and crafts projects out of new and recycled materials such as water bottles and egg cartons. Show your creative side while drawing and painting too!

Get Your Game On! (ages 8 -12): Play challenging indoor and outdoor games while making new friends! Many exciting and funny games to keep you moving and LAUGHING!

Bits, Bytes, and Game Design (ages 8 - 12): Like playing video games? Interested in computers? Learn how they work in this workshop designed to teach campers how to build a computer and design video games through coding. This is a great opportunity to learn about computers while having a lot of FUN!

Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (ages 8 - 12): Ever wish you could make a miniature version of your favorite plane, train, car or truck? Maybe you have your own rad design in mind! In this camp students have the opportunity to learn model assembly and building of a model of their choice. Campers will learn design, pin stripping, and painting skills. Models will be available or students may bring their own!

Olympic Size Chef's Needed! (ages 8 - 12): Looking for a team of great chefs to create Brazilian dishes and Olympic treats! Learn to prepare something exciting and new each day. Enjoy a sampling of the creations, then WOW your friends and family with your Gold Medal cooking skills when you recreate these dishes at home in celebration of the 2016 Olympics!
