I guess to ensure that the populace can feed themselves, trains themselves, takes responsibility for their own health, educates themselves, informs themselves, arms themselves or otherwise takes action for their own safety into their own hands, takes the steps needed to vote upon themselves - and so forth.

Liberals see some dystopia where the government does all this TO people. However, all of them are easily shed - most of the time - if a person is willing to just do for themselves what they should be able to do.
Conservatives fear a dystopia where people are so dependent on the government, they cannot survive without it holding their hand, wiping their chin and wiping their ass.

Most of these, a person should ALWAYS be responsible for themselves. It is not the government's job to FEED you, or inform you, or hold your hand and show you how to vote. Just about every election cycle has more people voting than before, so it's not being withheld.

This continent was tamed from wilderness to modern cities by pioneers who left the comforts of home to brave the elements - and the safety of civilization - without government helping them on the way. Think of it - unlike Europe and Asia, where cities were founded a thousand years ago, we have modern cities that barely existed a hundred years ago.

We've lost that pioneer spirit apparently.
