"The Navy deep-sixed all of its 91 enlisted ratings titles Thursday, marking the beginning of an overhaul of the rigid career structure that has existed since the Continental Navy in a radical shift sure to reverberate through the fleet and the veterans community beyond.

Sailors will no longer be identified by their job title, say, Fire Controlman 1st Class Joe Sailor, effective immediately. Instead, that would be Petty Officer 1st Class Joe Sailor."

Thought I was reading The Duffle Blog, but no. Is there nothing Mabus can't **** up? Simply amazing...

SecNav in hot water over trying to create a PC navy. Sailors won't have it. Meanwhile ships are breaking down at a record pace.

Navy Secretary Ray Mabus is facing furor in the ranks over his decision to break with centuries of tradition and stop all identification of sailors by their job titles. It’s a lunatic fight to be having when the Navy faces multiple disasters.

damn the torpedos

Whats funny is that they are assigning NOC, or Navy Occupational Codes, and AOs were assigned A420, evidently by someone who has never heard of Google.

Evidently you, like them, cannot operate a Google.

Now do you see the funny? But the Navy has had a numerical system in place. Tied to platforms, not generic specialties. I was an AO, but I was also an 8271, P-3 Inflight orndnanceman, and a ground technician also. Cant remember that number.

I wonder how they'll do the Warfare Specialist designations. Like an ET1 would be ET1(SW). I guess it'll be PO1(SW).

Pretty sure they will just drop them. Still earn them, but they will not be appended to your title.
