the DMV run around

Here's the deal: small flatbed trailer is up for registration renewal; however, it can't be renewed in my deceased husbands name of course so I am trying to have the title changed to my name. Why should that be so difficult? I've made 3 trips to DMV and each time I get someone else who tells me something different. I've called, read online and ask what I need...and have all needed docs etc....at least until I actually get there in person...then it is all wrong. So I'm hoping to get some info from anyone who has had experience. Here's what the office has told me:

I've been told to use the automated machine. (wrong, can't be done that way)
I've been told to have a copy of my Letter of Admin. (wrong again, need original)
I've been told the trailer does not need to be inspected because the title says N/A.

Now, if I go back the 4th time and someone else says it DOES need an inspection, I might snap!!

So my question is: Do you think I should get an inspection on this trailer? And who in southern Md would or could do a state inspection on 2004 flatbed trailer.

You've discovered a particular specialty of the morons that work in MD's DMV. They are specialists at dealing out bad information and deflecting any feedback on same. Legend, even.

I never, ever, never, ever deal with those morons. Have not for going on 25 years. Go to an independent service like Fast Stop and your problems will be resolved.

I bought an 18 foot car trailer originally from Oklahoma [non title state] Bill of sale acts as a title

I have to

1. get it inspected add an emergency battery stop for the electric brakes [MD law]
2. go back to the seller and get a notarized bill of sale before they would accept the original doc.

The Hitchman in Waldorf does inspections

in the future when there is no one left alive to dispute the sale, just forge the signature of your husband or ask another male to do it, so it is different from your hand writing

basically selling to you from your husband.

Why should that be so difficult?

It shouldn't. It should be a simple matter of you calling, asking what you need to do, they tell you, you do it. This is why people get pissed and have a fit in the middle of the DMV, because of this nonsense.

Like Gilligan said, call Fast Stop and tell them what you need to have happen. It's not expensive to use them and they'll take care of it.

Thank you everyone...been very helpful. I honestly believe the idiots at DMV actually ENJOY what they do to us...seeing the disappointment on our face when we have to walk away for the 3rd time.

Hi all. Only 2nd post here, but this subject caught my eye as we had a somewhat similar experience. My in-laws were both taken off the streets by Maryland MVA--licenses recalled--after some medical concerns started affecting their driving (thank GOD!). They decided they'd give their car to our daughter (their grand-daughter) to drive. The plan was for them to 'gift' the car to my wife/their daughter and we would title it in my wife's name and avoid the inspection. Unfortunately, my MIL unexpectedly passed away prior to this being completed. As both in-laws' names were on the title, I researched what had to be done to make the transfer and decided it was too much of a hassle. I figured the MVA had no idea my MIL had passed, and even if they did, how could they possible know when the title transfer was signed--before or after her death? So, I had my FIL sign in his space, and we signed his wife's name ourselves. Took the form to MVA and the car and tags were transferred to my wife's name with no problem. Still cost almost $200 though. I would assume this could be done with a trailer, with your husband 'gifting' it to you before his death. Of course, at this point the 'cat may be out of the bag' if the process has already been started, but if it's not too late I would think the same can be done in your situation. Maybe another MVA though. You might look suspicious to them at this point, lol!

Good luck. Ahhh, the Maryland MVA.. The gift that keeps on giving!

I lost the title to a 1978 truck. I had an old registration card, however, which included the VIn and the Title Number.

It was a pitched battle to get that replacement title.because....the old VIN numbering was still used in 1978 (fewer digits) and the computerized MVA system had not been built to recognize the old numbers. Even with the registration card in my hand ...I was informed in no uncertain terms by the gal behind the counter that the VIN was invalid so there was nothing she could do for me..

About 12 yrs ago my m-in-law was getting the run-around over the phone for 2 days when she called DMV. She couldn't get a straight answer out of anyone, kept being transferred and cut off. Finally she blew up at someone and they got snippy and told her to call Governor Ehrlich if she had a problem. So, she did, explained her frustration to someone in the governors office, left her name and number, an hour later someone from the DMV called her back and straightened out her issue in 10 minutes and apologized for her trouble. The next day, the governors office called and asked if the problem was taken care of.

I spent months fighting a VIN problem. DMV claimed the reg/title didn't match the VIN specified on the insurance card. Outwardly, it looked fine, no difference, but DMV kept rejecting it. Threat after threat of fines, revocation of license, etc... I even did a pencil trace of the VIN sticker on the truck and brought it in with me. They still told me it was wrong. Right.... the VIN tag is wrong.... I finally asked if I could see the screen she was looking at. Surprisingly, she agreed. My old school IT experience kicked in.... it was in IBM fonts. Anyone that has worked with IBM knows that a 0 (zero) and an O (oh) are different in that a zero has a slash thru it, but the zero slash does not print, it looks like an O when printed. DMV had typed it incorrectly when the original title/reg was created. Their fault. I got a corrected reg and title, with no apology for the threats and time I had to take off from work to fight it.
