Mens' pants zippers

I have lost some weight this past year. Being a person who hates to shop for cloths, I packed away clothes that didn't fit anymore maybe 15 years ago.
Got out an old pair of Wrangler jeans and what a pleasant surprise the first time I used the zipper for its intended purpose.
No more pulling the pants down in front and having sharp zipper teeth scratching tender areas.
The zipper in the old jeans measures 7 inches. Newer pants measure 5.5 inches.
When did this creep up on us? "pun intended" And why? Is it a style thing, cost cutting?

Did some measuring.
Front rise: From the top of the waist to the crotch seam (the one that goes down the inside of each leg)
Zipper: From the top of the waist to the bottom of the zipper opening.

Old Wranglers: Rise 13" Zipper 9"
Newer Wranglers: Rise 12½" Zipper 8"
New khakis: Rise12" Zipper 7"

Probably one of the reasons that I quit buying Wranglers, they just aren't as comfortable on me as they use to be. I buy Dickies jeans now, the fabric is heavy and holds up, unlike Wranglers.
