The Birth of a Narrative
'Fake news' didn't become a problem until Nov. 11

“If fake news that’s being released by some foreign government is almost identical to reports that are being issued through partisan news venues, then it’s not surprising that that foreign propaganda will have a greater effect,” he said echoing his warning in the closing days of the campaign that the internet had become a “dust cloud of nonsense.” The press conference came a day after Facebook announced it would team with fact checking sites to police its news feeds.

Several journalists and media thinkers picked up on the trend of fake news in the month leading up to the election. Laura Davis of the Annenberg Media Center told a University of Southern California panel on Oct. 11 that a “filter bubble” was responsible for the proliferation of fake news. “I think it’s having an actual effect on democracy, because people are not believing sources like they might have in the past,” she said. The Washington Post agreed that “Facebook is a ripe environment for hoaxes and conspiracies” in a report published the following day.

“Users tend to cluster into like-minded bubbles, and they receive highly personalized news in News Feed and through services such as Trending,” the Post reported.

I like this arrogant, condescending part best: "because people are not believing sources like they might have in the past,”. The gall to think that the vast majority of people cannot do a bit of vetting themselves. If people choose to be ignorant, then they can continue to be ignorant by only relying on sources from the past. Journalism is dead. If the truth comes from sources other than the sources of the past, and those past sources choose to not put it out for political expedience, then shame on them.

Journalism is not dead. In fact, the opportunity to do it is wide open. The question is lack of demand.

Agree. There is too much opportunity to engage in confirmation bias and never have to be confronted with anything you don't want to be true. Many people seem to like it that way, given the loyalty to various biased media sources on both sides of the issues.

As far as reporting on the who, what, where, when, and how of topics, it's dead. Keeping one's biases out of it has disappeared, therefore it's not journalism. It's opinion. Even sports sections are politicized.

As the old Dragnet saying - Just the facts, ma'am.

We don't need any personal opinion on any news article, but try and find one that is involved with any topic of substance that is ripping the fabric of our society apart.

It's not dead. There is a market just waiting for it. Especially now.

"Propaganda" - or any biased news source - is not what most of these folks are calling "fake news".

"Fake news" is simply made up out of whole cloth. It's on the order of Batboy and aliens and vampires suing airlines for smashing their coffins in-flight.
It's made up.

You know, I've said many times, the major news outlets could absolutely END FOX new or any right wing outlet in short order if they would do but one thing.
And that is be fair to the right. Fair, unbiased - not tossing a bone with condescension. Stop the ridicule, the looking down on "flyover" states.

I about busted a gut when Krugman declared he'd never heard of liberals looking down on Joe Sixpacks - a term while not utterly pejorative sounds funny
from a man who almost exclusively hangs out with Joe Chardonnay. Yes, they do. Stop the sneering, and listen.

I've said this - they could END the juggernaut that is right wing news - but it requires them to be fair. And they will *NEVER* do that.

And why pray tell do you feel any better than anyone else in this forum.
You should stop and view your own feeling of superiority.

Because it doesn't show itself in reality.
