Navy, Trump planning biggest fleet expansion since Cold War

" BATH, Maine (AP) — With President-elect Donald Trump demanding more ships, the Navy is proposing the biggest shipbuilding boom since the end of the Cold War to meet threats from a resurgent Russia and saber-rattling China.

The Navy's 355-ship proposal released last month is even larger than what the Republican Trump had promoted on the campaign trail, providing a potential boost to shipyards that have struggled because budget caps that have limited money funding for ships.

At Maine's Bath Iron Works, workers worried about the future want to build more ships but wonder where the billions of dollars will come from.

"Whether Congress and the government can actually fund it, is a whole other ball game," said Rich Nolan, president of the shipyard's largest union. "

Now, there is some infrastructure that will create some serious jobs.

True...but highly inefficient as it does nothing to repair, upgrade replace our crumbling infrastructure.

Put the same amount of money into roads and bridges...modern rail and air transport systems...and you impact the entire economy now and decades into the future and it makes us more competitive with China.

Building naval ships doesn't move goods more efficiently around the country, doesn't make your commute easier, doesn't reduce the downtime for truckers due to traffic or downtime of trucks due to repairs caused by crappy roads.

You always ask for more than you intend to get.
Hopefully they will plan this expansion to get the right ships that they need, but I expect the rest of the military will be getting in line also.
It's time for some expansion and some more people should be a part of that.

Right now its a bit soon to be making comments about what each force will get.
There will be a ton of manipulations twixt what they want and what they get.

Do both.

Back in the day Reagan was pushing for a 600 ship navy. The Oliver Perry class fast frigates were built during the push. They were the yugos of surface combatants and were referred to as the ghetto navy. They could be built quickly for not a lot of money. Built for just over $190 million each. All have been decommissioned by now.

Maybe but without the military strength you won't have to worry about infrastructure .

You don't have goods to move about the country if you lose control of the sea. Might I refer you to the actions of the Chinese

Actually, a total of 71 FFG-7s were built between 1975–2004. The ones that remain today were sold to other nations.

Uh...what exactly did Obama do, in the 8 years he was in office, to improve the infrastructure? And, He definitely wasn't increasing military budgets.

You have some valid points in there.

I would say that having an easier commute, less down time for truckers and trucks, and goods moving efficiently around the country does not provide for the common defense of the nation.

I would also say that having an easier commute, et al, and providing for the common defense does not establish a uniform rule of naturalization.

That is to say, all of these things are the functions of a federal government, and each needs to be prioritized and accomplished. None of them are really comparable to the other except that each process fights for the same funds (or, in Larry's utopia, none of them need to compete because we just print whatever we want and throw it in the national bank with no impact on the value of the dollar).

You see this, right?

Would more ships result in these incidents not happening? I doubt it. What good are they if we're not going to use them? When Iran (or any other country) do this crap, sink them. When Russian fighters buzz our ships, shoot them down. Or, at a minimum, lock on to them.

Well, no, of course not, but when our Iranian buddies decide to go hot with their "swarming suicidal speedboats" we might have enough hulls handy to swat the buggers.
