Power with Control
Regarding Trumps possible cutting of the NEA.
Young Earnest Person 1 : That's a violation on the First Amendment of the Constitution.
Me: How so? Art is indeed free speech, govt funding of art is not.
YEP 2: Exactly. That's why it's unethical of Trump to violate the Constitution let alone pretend it doesn't exist.
Me: Not quite sure what that means.
YEP 2: Art has been a self-explanatory Freedom of Speech for years and is funded by the government. That includes art museums, art shows, exhibits, public parks, historic museums, etc. The hypocrisy behind Trump is beyond repulsive.
Me: Govt funding of the arts is not a Constitutionally protected right. It simply isn't. I'm open to factual arguments sitting me to be wrong, but I'm pretty sure you won't find that.
YEP 2: You're not wrong on that part because it's not a right, but promoting art that expresses that right is one. Yes, govt funding isn't a right, but people have careers that display artwork from past artists for years to honor and respect those artists in art history.
Me: The point is that you are guaranteed the freedom to practice it, not that it will be paid for. Nor the promotion of same. That's not a right. The govt has no responsibility to fund any of those things. I'm not saying it's bad that we do. Just that it's not part of the Constitution.
Scary, these kids.
