The Republican and Democratic cloakrooms are situated just off the floor of each chamber, and there a handful of men and women scramble to keep the members abreast of activity. ''We're an extension office of the senators' staffs,'' said Bill Norton, who works in the Senate Democratic cloakroom.
In that cloakroom, four people answer phones and keep the Democratic members informed of Senate business. Across the aisle is a slighter larger Republican contingent of six; because the Republicans are the majority party in the Senate, the Republican cloakroom handles more action than its Democratic counterpart.
