High School Actors on Center Stage March and April
The Cat in the Hat, a loveable ogre, a bubbly attorney and more exciting characters help shape the lineup for Charles County Public Schools (CCPS) high school spring theatre plays and productions. Students are busy preparing for their events, which start this weekend with St. Charles High School’s spring production. The following is a list of events, including ticket information for each high school.
St. Charles High School kicks off the CCPS high school spring play season with Tom Taggart’s “Game of Gold” this weekend, 7 p.m. March 3-4 and 2 p.m. March 5. The comedy sets stage in the Wild West and follows characters surrounding the kidnapping of a local woman, stolen gold mines, gamblers and more. Ticket prices are $5 for students, senior citizens and military members and $8 for general admission. CCPS employees receive one free admission with their school system badge. Maurice J. McDonough and Thomas Stone high schools are hosting their spring productions the weekend of March 30-31 and April 1.
McDonough student actors are performing “Seussical the Musical” 6:30 p.m. March 30-31 and April 1. A 2 p.m. show also is planned for April 1. The show features several loveable Dr. Seuss characters from classic books such as “Horton Hears a Who!,” “Horton Hatches the Egg,” and “Miss Gertrude McFuzz.” Tickets are $10 for adults, $8 for students, senior citizens and military members, and $7 for thespians with their student identification card. Stone student actors are presenting “Shrek the Musical” 7 p.m. March 30-31 and April 1. The show features the adventures of a loveable green ogre, Shrek, as he encounters fairy tale characters and falls in love. The production is based on the popular 2001 DreamWorks movie “Shrek.” Stone is hosting the production with the support of the Thomas Stone High School Instrumental Booster group. The North Point High School theatre department is presenting the musical “Guys and Dolls” 7 p.m. April 6-8. A 1 p.m. show also is planned for April 8. The musical is a romantic comedy and based in New York City. The main character, a gambler named Nathan, owes several debts and the show follows him as he attempts to pay them while turning to his girlfriend and other gamblers for help. Tickets are $10 for general admission and $5 for students and senior citizens. CCPS employees receive one free admission with their school system identification badge. Student actors at Henry E. Lackey High School are presenting Lin-Manuel Miranda’s “In the Heights” 6:30 p.m. April 21-22 and 2 p.m. April 23. The show takes place in the tight-knit community of Washington Heights in Manhattan and features a young storeowner, Usnavi, as he encounters his neighbors and learns of their successes, struggles and heartbreaks. Tickets are $8 for adults, $7 for senior citizens, military members and students, and $6 for thespians. CCPS employees and one guest receive free admission by showing their school system badge. Student actors from La Plata and Westlake high schools will present their spring productions the last weekend in April.
La Plata is hosting “Legally Blonde the Musical” 6:30 p.m. April 27-29 and also at 2:30 p.m. on April 29. The production is a fun musical based on the movie “Legally Blonde” and follows the transformation of Elle Woods as she learns about stereotypes, snobbery and scandal as she pursues her dream to become a lawyer. Student actors at Westlake will present “The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee,” 7 p.m. April 27-29. The show is a musical comedy and sets stage at Putnam Valley Middle School, where six quirky students participate in the school spelling bee, coordinated by three equally quirky adults.
