McConnell on Mexico Paying for Wall: ‘Uh, No’

Ubi bene ibi patria
" When asked if Mexico will pay for the U.S. border wall President Donald Trump wants constructed, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell responded flatly: “Uh, no.” McConnell made the remark during an interview with Politico Playbook. The wall, which could cost as much as $20 billion, was a cornerstone of Trump’s presidential campaign. The president pledged over and over that Mexico would foot the bill, but since becoming commander in chief Trump has waffled, saying Mexico will “pay us back,” meaning American taxpayers will foot the bill at the outset. Mexico has said it will not, under any circumstances, pay for the wall. "

So if they - unwillingly - pay us back through costs that we place on them - then they pay for it.
Eventually.

Did people think we were going to send them the bill?

Um...and if those costs are just repackaged and sent back to US consumers (which is EXACTLY how that would work) then we still pay for it...

Did you actually think Mexico will pay for a wall WE build on OUR side of the border?

In essence, yes. By having to pay to collect their dearly deported, and having to not collect money from our corporations, and having fewer drug dealers selling their wares, and getting less in "aid" from the US, yes, I think that's a reasonable assertion.

make sure you are holding your breath

By that, do you mean that your issue is not trying to control the border, but rather your issue is that Trump said Mexico would pay for it and it won't be a direct check to pay for it like some people assumed?

You are all for controlling the border, but you just dislike the way Trump said it would be paid for, and you want to make sure people know it won't be paid for by a check from Mexico, the strawman the left generated to counter Trump's claim. Right?

That's stupid, but not surprisingly, you went straight to the "let's slap a tariff on products from Mexico which will ALWAYS be bought by Americans, because we'll still buy them no matter the cost".
Cause, you know, that's the only thing anyone meant.

To say nothing of the multitude of costs they might bear that in no way go back to American consumers.

What happens to Mexican products that DON'T sell here? Because we can buy them cheaper from some other nation?
What happens to a halt of remittances? The actual benefit to the Mexican economy from the slowing of drug money?
The cost to them of the slowing of emigration, and the return of citizens they don't want anymore?
It goes on - they pay for it.

so you are giving up your SS for the wall?

I don't have a problem with Mexico paying for a wall. YOU DO! Ignorant response from an ignorant person.

Typical word-bending, liberal crybaby snowflake. Cry, cry, cry about how things are done but when it comes down to it.... you hide behind the outcomes.

Just like the libtards that omit the "illegal" part of the illegal immigrants that Trump is trying to prevent from entry. And the ones that whine about the police BUT... damn sure would be calling one if an illegal was kicking the liberalism out of you during a home invasion.

I think that sensible people understand that the very definition of a sovereign nation means that the nation in question gets to decide what to do with its borders.

With that said, sensible people also understand illegal immigration for what it is: economic osmosis. Further, sensible people understand that a wall at the souther border won't do squat for immigration, considering most of it doesn't actually happen through the souther border any longer.

Finally, sensible people understand that the best way to keep people where they are is to have economic policies in place which allow them to be prosperous where they are, or at least policies which don't put them in more and more abject poverty, thus spurring migration to feed them and their families.

This really ain't rocket science, but you know, campaign promises and all that. The wall will be built, Americans will pay for it, and it will cost at least triple what the little orange man has said it will cost.
