Some doctors wont see patients unless they have health insurance. My co-workers daughter wouldn't be seen by her pediatrician due to no insurance

Fortunately, I've yet to encounter any like that. In fact..I've yet to encounter any that didn't offer at least some discount for paying cash.

I posted a thread on that a long time ago, that you could negotiate with the doctor and pay him directly for the same amount he gets from insurance, which is substantially lower than his bill. I don't remember all the particulars, and couldn't find the link.

I did find a link to reducing your lab tests.

I wonder if that works when most physicians are part of some huge medical group? Does Medstar take cash? (I'll ask in Oct during my next annual checkup.)

I "financed" some dental work a few years ago. Worked it out with the Dr. and his "office manager" to make monthly payments til the balance was paid off.

I agree ,, I did the cash healthcare for my son and myself up until two years ago. When we went we used the same doctors as we did before along with the local Hospital extensions like in Charlotte Hall as out here in Indiana. It seemed to cost me about 55% when I paided cash / CC the day of service than what would be charged to the Insurance company and what I would be billed if I didn't pay then.

The only problem with that model is if you have a high deductible plan and they won't count health services you paid for in cash against your deductible. Most insurers require that everything has to go through their billing system for it to count against the deductible. So someone may 'save money' by paying cash for something like an MRI, later in the year they get sick but they still have to pay all the way up to their deductible because the insurance won't accept the privately negotiated out of pocket expense.

But yes, the Surgcenter of Oklahoma shows how this is done for full-up cash patients. The reason they can do that is because they take cash/CC up front. They also don't have unpaid emergency cases that come in through the ER and they never have to deal with frivolous insurance denials and deadbeat patients. It must be good to live in the capitalist part of america. In Maryland, with its healthcare cost commission, what they are doing would be illegal. Can't possibly undercut the crony capitalist hospitals that have the Maryland General Asylum in their pockets.
