Numbers 28:9 “‘On the Sabbath day, make an offering of two lambs a year old without defect, together with its drink offering and a grain offering of two-tenths of an ephah[c] of the finest flour mixed with olive oil. 10 This is the burnt offering for every Sabbath, in addition to the regular burnt offering and its drink offering.

11 “‘On the first of every month, present to the Lord a burnt offering of two young bulls, one ram and seven male lambs a year old, all without defect. 12 With each bull there is to be a grain offering of three-tenths of an ephah[d] of the finest flour mixed with oil; with the ram, a grain offering of two-tenths of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with oil; 13 and with each lamb, a grain offering of a tenth of an ephah of the finest flour mixed with oil. This is for a burnt offering, a pleasing aroma, a food offering presented to the Lord. 14 With each bull there is to be a drink offering of half a hin[e] of wine; with the ram, a third of a hin[f]; and with each lamb, a quarter of a hin. This is the monthly burnt offering to be made at each new moon during the year. 15 Besides the regular burnt offering with its drink offering, one male goat is to be presented to the Lord as a sin offering.[g]

Now this is getting to be a lot of work. Twice a day, every day, they had to give over two sheep. Then once a week, it was two more sheep on top of the two for the day of the week. Oh and on top of that, the two sheep for the Sabbath had to be done the day before the Sabbath because on the Sabbath they had to rest. Then once a month two young bulls, one ram and seven male lambs a year old, and one male goat, all without defect on top of the two sheep for the day. No wonder they were shepherds.

This is from the easy English commentary.

These were the instructions for the offerings that people had to make on every Sabbath. The Sabbath was the special day each week when the people had to rest from work (Exodus 20:8-11).

The Israelites divided their calendar into months. A new month began on the day that the new moon appeared in the sky (Leviticus chapter 23). This was a happy occasion. On this day, the priests had to offer extra sacrifices and offerings. These sacrifices and offerings were in addition to the usual daily offerings (see Numbers 28:1-8). They included a sin offering of a male goat. This offering was for uncleanness (see Numbers 15:22-26).

Those people must have had some strong bodies. Imagine what it was like to manhandle all this livestock. After its neck was slit, which was no easy task, the animal had to be hoisted onto the altar and turned on the fire.

This was, however, better than the alternatives. Remember Leviticus 18:21. Those people who worshiped the god Molek, heated the god over the fire until it was red hot and then laid a baby on it and played loud music and sang to cover the sound of the baby screaming in anguish.
