40 Moses told the Israelites all that the Lord commanded him.[f]

f. Numbers 29:40 In Hebrew texts this verse (29:40) is numbered 30:1.

I use to think "How could anyone forget what happened in the desert during those forty days? How could anyone forget those awful plagues, especially the one on Passover?" Then 911 happened. Now I know how people can forget. There are people alive today who weren't alive for 911 and they question things I would not question because of what happened on that day.

This is from the easy English site.

Probably, the Festival of Shelters was a festival to celebrate the harvest of grapes and olives. It was the greatest of the Jewish festivals. It was called ‘the festival of the LORD’ (Leviticus 23:41). Leviticus 23:39-43 records God’s instructions that the Israelites had to live in shelters during the 7 days. This reminded them about their journey to the Promised Land. In the desert, they had not built proper houses. They had lived in tents or shelters so that they could travel easily.

During the Festival of Shelters, the priests sacrificed more bulls and male sheep than during all other occasions. Bulls and male sheep were the most valuable animals. The large number of very expensive sacrifices and offerings emphasised that the people were very happy. They wanted to thank God for all that he had done on their behalf. They wanted to show that they were grateful.

In addition to these offerings, the people could give their own private offerings. These included offerings that they had promised to give for a particular reason. Also, it included offerings to thank God for something that he had done for them personally.

This additional information came from studylight.org.

Just as the LORD commanded Moses.

For Israel to obey what God commanded in Numbers 28:1-31; Numbers 29:1-40, it meant that every year, the priests sacrificed on 1,086 lambs, 113 bulls, 32 rams, more than a ton of flour, and some 1,000 bottles of oil and wine behalf of the nation.

The most prominent animal of sacrifice was the lamb. This is a obvious prophetic reference to Jesus, who is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world. (John 1:29)

All this sacrifice did not include the sacrifices made by individuals or households. The priests and Levites were clearly busy with the job of sacrifice, and it was fulfilled at considerable expense.

In the days of Jesus, there is record of 255,600 Passover lambs being sacrificed at one Passover just by individuals and households.

Significantly, none of it was enough! Not one of these hundreds of thousands of sacrifices over the centuries could ever take away a person’s sin; that had to wait until a perfect sacrifice was offered - the sacrifice of Jesus.

That's a whole lot of work. It had to be done just right. Those Priests and Levites must have had some serious muscles from lugging all the sacrifices up onto the altar. I would assume, their personal sacrifices had to be done first thing at daybreak and the last thing at night. I bet they slept well at night. I wonder how long it took for this to become ordinary.... repetitious.... how long it took for this to lose its luster.
