Narrative:

On Monday, March 24, 2017 at approximately 3:56 p.m., Troopers from the Maryland State Police La Plata Barrack responded to a personal injury collision involving two vehicles on southbound Indian Head Highway at Lackey Drive.

An investigation conducted by Troopers indicates that a 2009 Ford Econoline van, operated by William Cooper, was attempting to turn left from Lackey Drive onto northbound Indian Head Highway when it failed to yield the right-of-way to, and was struck by, a 1992 Chevrolet LLV postal truck, operated by Russell Brann, as it was traveling southbound on Indian Head Highway.

The Ford Econoline, owned by a martial arts company, had just departed Indian Head Elementary School with 8 students, ages 6-10, on board. As a result of the collision, Brann and 4 children were injured and transported by EMS to local hospitals for treatment. The remaining 4 children were not injured and were reunited with their parents on scene.

Driver error was found to be the cause of this collision and Cooper, who was uninjured, was issued a citation for failing to yield the right-of-way.

Anyone who may have witnessed or who has information regarding this collision is asked to contact the La Plata Barrack Duty Officer at (301) 392-1200 and reference case number 17-MSP-017080.
