Who’s Doing The Killing In The U.S.? Scholar John Lott Pegs 51% of Murders To 2% Of Counties

The study notes that these findings are in line with the data presented in Lott's book More Guns, Less Crime showing that "from 1977 to 2000, on average 73 percent of counties in any given year had zero murders."

The conclusion of the study is that "murder isn't a nationwide problem. It's a problem in a very small set of urban areas, and any solution must reduce those murders."

Lott told The American Spectator "that the counties that have zero murders have by far the highest gun ownership rates."

"The gun ownership rates in those more rural parts of the country are about 111% higher than the gun ownership rates in the urban areas that have the highest murder rates," Lott said.

There are certainly plenty of other factors that cause the disparity in murder rates between rural and urban areas, but the high gun ownership and low murder rate in rural areas cannot be ignored.

Oh good lord...a "scholar" came up with this horsesh!t? Oh...wait its a right wing "scholar"...someone interested in pushing a political point in a newspaper as opposed to someone doing actual study...

so let's have some fun...

So let's start here...what is the population density of these areas? Do people actually interact with each other in these areas on a regular basis?

The conclusion of the study is that "murder isn't a nationwide problem. It's a problem in a very small set of urban areas, and any solution must reduce those murders."
Murders occur in all areas of the country...they occur in every state...they occur on the East coast...west coast..in the south and in the north...that pretty much covers the entire nation now doesn't it?

Lott told The American Spectator "that the counties that have zero murders have by far the highest gun ownership rates."

Irrelevant...they also have the lowest number of people...lots of people have guns in the cities too! Murders happen in every state that allows owners to carry weapons. Any "scholar" would know murder is a much more complicated proposition than just who owns guns.

"The gun ownership rates in those more rural parts of the country are about 111% higher than the gun ownership rates in the urban areas that have the highest murder rates," Lott said.

Pickup truck ownership is probably 111% higher too...why isn't that the reason the murder rate is lower? Ownership of country music CDs is probably 111% higher too...maybe songs about pickup trucks are the reason why the murder rate is lower...(you get the stupidity of the "scholar's" position yet?) the ownership of bolo ties is probably 1000% higher...maybe ugly neckties are the reason there are fewer murders...

There are certainly plenty of other factors that cause the disparity in murder rates between rural and urban areas, but the high gun ownership and low murder rate in rural areas cannot be ignored.

Um...sure it can and so can the scholar be ignored when the thesis is that ONLY gun ownership impacts the murder rate.

MR and TJ have points. They make them very poorly, but they have points.

The study is accurate it would seem that murders are much more prevalent in very small areas of the country. While pickup truck ownership is not likely to affect crime, gun ownership is likely to affect it. Numerous studies of criminals and victims have proven this to be true. However, so does population density, as TJ pointed out. There is no causation shown, just a correlation. While the correlation has legs to imply causation (where country music CDs does not), that is only an implied thing, not an actual thing.

As the study and MR point out, murders still happen elsewhere. The point, poor MR couldn't grasp, is that the ratio of murders per person is exceptionally lower in the areas that have lower population concentrations. Not just murders, but murders per person. When, on average, 73% of the counties have ZERO murders, that pretty much proves that out.

So, we know that cities are warmer, use more energy, have more crime - the problems of global warming and murder can be significantly reduced if we simply limit population concentration. Federal laws should address this!!! No more than 100 people per square mile!!! Save the planet!!!!!!!

CalvertNewb,

You claim to be trying to understand an opposing point of view. The first thing you should try is to NOT be like this:
You can't even count to two. What an idiot
Yep, you are an idiot alrighty.

Now, I don't want to be misleading here - I've never once seen MR say he is trying to understand someone else's point of view, so it is not contrary to anything he's said that he talks like this. But, you tend to talk like this a lot and you've openly said that you are actually trying to understand. If you are actually trying to have an open-minded discussion on things, certainly you can see how talking like a trash-talking 6th grader will not help your case to get YOUR point across, or to actually comprehend the other person's point of view.

MR is a dolt, troll and chronic douche.

He will deliberately ignore things that contradict his bull#### and spin the narrative off into left field at any opportunity.

Basically shes TJ.
