Seattle Mayor Adds Diet Drinks to His Soda Tax ‘To Tackle White Privilege’

The mayor of Seattle has altered the rules of his proposed soda tax — which would fund education for minorities–to include diet drinks because affluent white people tend to consume them more.

Mayor Ed Murray of the staunchly liberal Seattle city originally proposed the soda tax during his state of the city address in February. Under his initial plan, distributors of sugary drinks would have to pay 2 cents per ounce.

It would cover sodas such as Coke and Pepsi, energy drinks like Red Bull, fruit drinks, sweetened teas and bottled coffees such as those sold by Starbucks.

The Mayor claimed the tax would bring $16 million in revenue that would be spent on education programs aimed at reducing disparities between the city’s white students and students of color.

But the mayor has updated the plan after the staff of the mayor’s office told him that the tax would actually disproportionately fall on poor minorities, who have higher rates of soda consumption than white residents.

seems like the good mayors reasoning violates the Equal Protection Clause

I am sure if a politician stated he wanted to TAX Air Jordan's because more Affluent Black bought them ... Progressives would be outraged

1.75 cents per ounce :jameo: wtf that has to be a typo

At what point do they ever realize more money isn't the answer?

So - how does this work? Can any government tax anything they want - because they can?
I guess I was falsely under the impression that taxes needed to be scrutinized for some reason.
You know, public health, roads - something.

They want to tax something, because white people buy it?

Reason Article ........

The rationale, as it has been in other cities silly enough to consider such taxes, was to"dramatically reduce the consumption of these unhealthy products" as an attack on health problems, primarily obesity, in Seattle.

The tax, Murray said, would pay the second dividend in better educations and economic opportunity. "Healthy kids get better educations and are more likely to have a brighter future," Murray said.

Then came the detractors and all their talk of a regressive tax falling disproportionally on low income and minority Seattle residents. "You know what is really regressive," a defiant Murray asked at an April 27 press conference. "You know what is really taking money out of African American communities? Tolerating an educational system that is failing kids of color everyday, leaving them without a future, and giving them food that will only lead to health problems."

While confusing these pristine motives with a diet soda tax on privileged whites, Murray was still unable to stop mau-mauing beverage makers, accusing them of adopting tobacco industry tactics targeting communities of color with a product "that only undermines the health of young people."

Aren't the Seattle schools integrated? Don't black and white students go to school together. To the same classes, the same teachers?

Someone tell me how black and white kids sitting in the same classroom is tolerating an educational system that is failing kids of color.
Do they serve different food to the kids of color than they feed to white kids?

Well, those are excellent questions that I would love to have this white supremacist Seattle bigot answer.

But you know what? Dummies gonna dumb. You have to be fairly unquestioning and unthinking to be a "progressive", so really these grifters can blather anything they want and the dummies will gobble it up and beg for more without question.

Well if the Seattle Mayor is so worried about it why doesn't he go back to busing?

It seems everyone who runs for any office first starts out by saying let's toss more money at the schools.
Money cannot teach people who don't want to learn.

Just further proof that soda taxes are not about health but money.

All taxes are about money. From our first income tax, instituted by a Republican if anyone cares, to pay for a war, was selectively applied only to those making over $800 a year, to home mortgage tax breaks to cigarette taxes, all the way back to the Whisky rebellion and on to this soda/diet/white people with money tax, taxes (and tax credits) were, are and always WILL be about serving constituents. Not the people. Constituents...your constituents. Of which, in this case, y'all are...not.

The ONE reason taxes will ALWAY be like this, R's or D's or I's or Party to be named later, is that it is the ONE thing a politician can do that has any value to his constituents. Tax policy is THE tool of politics. To wish it otherwise is to entirely misunderstand politics.
