Socialized medicine has never, throughout history, worked as advertised. Like, ever. It amazes me that people fall for that crap, but they still fall for emails from African princes who are looking for someone to help them hide their billion$ and happened to choose their email address at random. So there's that.

Socialized medicine has the same draw as every other government run entitlement program.

It appeals to those who like to be taken care of.

Overgrown children.

A doctor you don't have to pay. Gee, what would happen?

What happens when the government gives stuff away? What happens when anyone gives stuff away, especially stuff people want?
Just go to the emergency room of any hospital - especially a big city one. EVERYONE wants it.
Which means you wait, or you're triaged - your need determines your place in line.

This is the problem of socialized medicine. When it's free, everyone shows up with every sniffle and bruise.
When it costs a few bucks, the crowd goes away.

You can't GIVE STUFF AWAY and expect it to not be crowded.
You can't GIVE STUFF AWAY and expect the same quality of care as when it wasn't "free".

The Gard family has thrown in the towel on trying to get little Charlie away from the State medical machine. They are now discussing how to let little Charlie die now that he's a couple weeks short of his first birthday (according to NPR news this afternoon).

Even without socialized medicine this would have been the outcome. The rest of the world has signed on to what's called the "United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child" which pretty much states that the government is going to enforce what it thinks the child's rights are over the wishes of the parents.

Article 3 1. In all actions concerning children, whether undertaken by public or private social welfare institutions, courts of law, administrative authorities or legislative bodies, the best interests of the child shall be a primary consideration.

If Hill had won, this probably would have been signed into law already.

So sad. It is hard to watch the news about Charlie. Prayers to Charlie and his family.

We don't really know that. Arbitration went on for months. Doctors here said they could have provided the care Charlie needed, and might have had a chance.

His parents sould have been merciful to there own child and unplugged him months ago.

You know, this is the sort of thing that gets me angry... The parents should have done what they felt to be best for their child; not you, not some uninformed doctors, not the government... If the parents felt there was no chance they would have done exactly that.

Connie Yates Tells the Inside Story of What Was Not Done for Charlie Gard

Why was his “treatment was not commenced in January or April this year”? Because “Charlie was found to have ‘irreversible brain damage’ and treatment was considered as ‘futile’. Dr Hirano and Dr Bertini, together with other internationally renowned paediatric neurologists have now reviewed Charlie’s MRI’s and EEG’s which were performed in January and April respectively, and they have confirmed that these MRI’s and EEG’s showed NO actual evidence of irreversible brain damage.”

Read the next paragraph carefully”

“Unfortunately Professor Hirano did not have access to the raw data and he based what he said in April on reports. We did not have access to these second opinions before the initial trial [in which Justice Francis ruled Charlie should be “allowed to die with dignity], hence why we are where we are today. Had we had the opportunity to have raw data of the MRIs and EEGs independently reviewed, we are convinced Charlie would be on treatment now and improving all the time.” (My emphases.)

We know GOSH fought relentlessly against any outsiders seeing Charlie’s medical records. Connie Yates’ statement raises profound and deeply disturbing questions that are unlikely ever to be fully answered.

#5. “However, we are now in July and our poor boy has been left to just lie in hospital for months without any treatment whilst lengthy court battles have been fought. We have been told time and time again that Charlie has a ‘progressive disease’ but rather than allow treatment for him with a medication that was widely accepted to have no side effects [the nucleoside therapy Dr. Hirano had patented which he would used with Charlie had Justice Francis allowed Charlie to be transported to the United States], Charlie has been left with his illness to deteriorate, sadly, to the point of no return.”

And what would any of that do for Charlie's non existent quality of life?
He has no brain activity, he can breath on his own, he blind.. he's a bag of jello, children born with this defect don't live past a few years if they are unlucky and kept on Machines.
He has zero quality of life.. He was born with zero quality of life.
It's absurd to pour huge amounts of money on a person that has zero quality of life.
Who do you think is on the hook for his massive medical bills? His parents?
If he came here once that million was gone whom do you think would pick up the tab?

Just be thankful that this didn't happen to your so illustrious, perfect son. You were blessed. Have some compassion. Oh, wait. You are not capable of that, according to what you post on this forum. You're welcome.

You have, totally, gone off the cliff in your hatred for me. So much so, that you don't even make sense, anymore. And, what does your reply have to do with Charlie? You are one sick puppy.

Why would I be jealous of you? I am glad I am not you.

Healthcare IS a basic human right. That has nothing to do with the government or what taxpayers are obligated to provide.

Exactly. Death panels, anyone? Charlie should have been allowed to go home with his parents. The story of Charlie was not going to end well, but it shouldn't have ended in a sterile, uncomfortable environment.

There you go folks... this is what death panels look like in socialized medicine. Someone outside the family gets to decide quality-of-life based on cost, and if you live or die. Well, you should be happy dog... Charlie is dead.................... money saved. :yay:

What I'm telling you is the US is the only country left that the children's care is almost exclusively the parents. The rest of the world has went to the theory that the government is going to do what they think is in the child's best interest and screw what the parents want. This UN resolution gives them the legal and moral backing to do it. as for the last part doctors here will try to keep a 200 year old brain dead quadriplegic alive as long as someone will keeps paying the bills.
