Deuteronomy 21:22 If someone guilty of a capital offense is put to death and their body is exposed on a pole, 23 you must not leave the body hanging on the pole overnight. Be sure to bury it that same day, because anyone who is hung on a pole is under God’s curse. You must not desecrate the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance.

This is from Bible.org.

"you shall surely bury" This intensified construction combines the infinitive absolute and Qal imperfect of "bury". YHWH's wrath demanded the offender's death as the penalty for his stubborn rebellion. However, YHWH's displeasure would transfer to the community if the body of the executed covenant violator was not dealt with properly and in a timely fashion.

Yesterday I read that rebellious sons were publicly beaten to death by the elders. This was to act as a warning to others who thought being a drunk or thief that you shouldn't do that.... Today I read that they are hanging those who are convicted of a capital offense on a pole. This was supposed to act as a warning as well.

This is from the biblestudytools.com site.

Hanging was not a Hebrew form of execution (gibbeting is meant), but the body was not to be left to rot or be a prey to ravenous birds; it was to be buried "that day," either because the stench in a hot climate would corrupt the air, or the spectacle of an exposed corpse bring ceremonial defilement on the land.

Now the Romans.... they weren't like the Hebrews... they left the bodies on the pole for the birds and other animals as a warning and a statement. Gross.....
