I'm looking right now at the Coke Zero can I bought in Burlington and there is a small symbol that says "Please recycle", which is what they say in every state. Nothing about getting 5-cents. Neither our hotel nor any of the places we've been has recycling bins - I looked. At the waterfront and parks they have garbage bins but nothing for recycling - it all goes in the same trash.

The places we've been, we're used to having two trash bins: one for trash trash and one for recycling, and sometimes separate recycling bins for bottles, cans, and plastic. Not in VT.

Their two old white men Senators aren't going anywhere. They are immortal, like vampires.

Or let me rephrase that: they don't practice what they preach. I can't get over that they don't recycle. And they also have a homeless problem.

    We'll be in Marathon 11/21 - 1/22 - I keep just missing you.

I'm still betting that you won't make it the entire month.

Okay, I do see the 5-cent recycle etched very faintly on the top of the can. You have to really look for it, so apparently they don't really want you collecting. And yesterday we were in Vergennes and I saw a combo trash/recycling can on the street. But that's the only one I've seen. So if I want to recycle my cans and get my nickel, I have to go somewhere; if I want to recycle my cans and not worry about the nickel (which is what I really do), I have to go to Vergennes.

They have a surprising number of vacationers at our hotel. I'm like, are there really that many people who want to see the teddy bear factory?? There was a car show last weekend that a lot of people came for. So that's the type of visitor VT attracts: someone who would drive 8 hours to look at cars.

Ohhh...well, that's how all those states are though: In CT you can take your bags of recyclables to a designated station, or in my town, the local grocery store has a big garage next to the entrance where you can dump them all in and get your money. Your actual garbage collector ain't gonna pay you for that. And almost all private residences with trash collection have recycling and trash collection bundled together (as in they give you a recycling bin for you to sort and a garbage truck comes round - your trash goes in one side, recycling on the other - and you don't have to pay extra, like here in MD - it's included bc they want you to do it)

However, I'm surprised you aren't seeing more 'public' recycling bins. I swear they're all over CT. I never thought about how much I was used to recycling until I came to MD.

Don't knock it. When I lived up there and was particularly broke and needed fuel for the car. I would go collect cans and get gas money. There are only so many ways an 18 year old can make extra money. Collecting cans was one of them. My dad had a machine shop and I would just go and cash in all the cans from the shop.
