Fusion GPS Founder Refuses To Identify Dossier Clients In Marathon Senate Session

In a marathon interview with the Senate Judiciary Committee on Tuesday, the co-founder of Fusion GPS, the opposition research firm behind the uncorroborated anti-Trump dossier, refused to identify the political clients that commissioned the salacious document.

Fusion GPS also stands behind the dossier, a lawyer for the firm said at the end of a 10-hour interview given by co-founder Glenn Simpson.

“Mr. Simpson told Congress the truth and cleared the record on many matters of interest to congressional investigators. He also kept the identities of Fusion GPS’ clients confidential,” Josh Levy, Simpson’s attorney, told The Daily Caller in a statement.

Simpson appeared for the interview after weeks of negotiations between his attorneys and the committee, which is one of three congressional panels investigation potential collusion between the Trump campaign and Russian government.

Be interesting to see if there is any legal, constitutional reason he should be forced to reveal who his client is. I can't think of any. There's no crime being investigated, so he's certainly not impeding an investigation of a crime.

On Wednesday and Thursday, there was more talk, but little enlightenment, on the source of the dossier. The Daily Caller's Chuck Ross talked to anti-Trump GOP strategists and donors and found that none of them knew anything about the supposed Republican donor who was allegedly helping bring down President Trump.

On Wednesday night, GOP strategist Rick Wilson, virulently anti-Trump, appeared on MSNBC's Rachel Maddow show and added nothing to our knowledge of the alleged Republican origins of the dossier.

Maddow said that last July, "an investigative reporter in the TV news business called up Rick Wilson and said, hey, basically, you're a NeverTrump guy, have you heard anything about this private intel operation that has turned up supposedly a whole sheaf of allegations about Trump being connected to Russia? About Russia having compromising material on Trump? And Trump being involved, or at least informed about this Russia hacking the Democratic Party?"

Wilson told Maddow, "I didn't know [the dossier] was from Christopher Steele or Fusion proper until January when the 'BuzzFeed' document rolled out. But the information was certainly circulating." Wilson said nothing about the alleged Republican origins of the dossier.

It's probably a good idea to take a closer look at how everyone seems to believe that Republicans started the Trump dossier. First, it's worth looking at which news organizations Fusion chose to tell about the dossier in the weeks before last year's presidential election.

Since when does the left care about anything being constitutional or legal? All they want to do is tie up congress.

Congress is pretty easy to tie up when the majority party has no balls, and no party loyalty.

Just last week, Glenn Simpson, head of Fusion GPS, the opposition research firm that handled the Trump dossier, refused to tell Grassley's and Feinstein's investigators who funded the effort. But there are other ways to get at the story — and the FBI is the number-one possibility.

That's because the FBI played a role in the case as it happened. Sometime in the process of collecting anti-Trump allegations from paid, Kremlin-linked Russian informants, Christopher Steele — the former British spy hired by Fusion to dig dirt in Russia — decided to take his information to the FBI. That appears to have been in the fall of 2016, at the height of the presidential campaign.

The FBI took the dossier seriously, in part because agents had dealt with Steele before in 2010 in the investigation into FIFA, the world soccer organization. So in October, Steele "reached an agreement with the FBI a few weeks before the election for the bureau to pay him to continue his work," according to a Washington Post report.

It was a mind-boggling development: Federal law enforcement agreeing to fund an ongoing opposition research project being conducted on behalf of one of the candidates in a presidential election. In the end, the FBI reportedly did not pay Steele, possibly because of publicity concerns.

One person whose mind was boggled by the news was Grassley. The Judiciary Committee chairman thought through the implications of the FBI adopting the Fusion-Steele dossier project, and on March 6 sent then-FBI Director James Comey a letter.

Subpoenas Target Research Firm Tied to Trump Dossier
Fusion GPS worked with former British spy to compile a 35-page document on Trump’s alleged ties to Moscow

The subpoenas were recently issued by the House Intelligence Committee to employees at Fusion GPS, which performs research for political and corporate clients.

During the 2016 presidential campaign, Fusion GPS worked with a former British spy named Christopher Steele to compile a 35-page dossier on Mr. Trump’s alleged ties to Moscow. The information contained in the dossier remains unverified and Mr. Trump has denied having any improper ties to the Russian government or Russian business interests.

The existence of the subpoenas was confirmed by an attorney for Fusion GPS and a Democratic aide familiar with the congressional investigation. The subpoenas were first reported by CNN.

“As we evaluate these subpoenas, we have serious concerns about their legitimacy,” said Joshua Levy, counsel to Fusion GPS.

Mr. Levy has previously said, in response to an earlier subpoena threat, that his clients would consider invoking their constitutional right to refuse to give testimony if compelled to appear in front of Congress.
