Sheriff Joe

God bless the USA
Trump did the right thing in pardoning Sheriff Joe. It is hard to believe Joe is 85 years old. What a patriot! The backlash on this decision will be extreme; to say the least. Hold on to your hats, y'all!

Arizona is a strange place. They re-elect McCain and they want to lock up Sheriff Joe.
Well I am glad the old man is free. May he enjoy what's left of his life.

Don't forget the appropriately named Jeff Flake.

Vermont is a strange place as well. Somehow they manage to elect Socialists to high government offices, yet there are gun stores all over the place and the general vibe is wholesome and family friendly, while a disproportionate number of homeless people are panhandling on the street. Burlington is their largest city, so you'd think if there were crazy Leftists running around that's where they'd be, but it doesn't appear so. They do, however, name everything after Pat Leahy and Bernie Sanders, just like Iraq did with Saddam Hussein. So maybe that's it - citizens are scared to vote against them.

I believe after this election we can forget about Flake. Surely Arizona has had enough of him.

I was listening to WMAL on the drive in this morning, and most of what I "know" about Sheriff Joe is - well, not totally true.

For one thing, they said he hadn't even been sentenced at the time of the pardon - it was pre-emptive, as it were.
Another is that the entire thing started with a lawsuit filed in 2007. Yes, I've read about many other legal concerns, but I'm referring just to the one that ultimately lead to his conviction on a contempt of court.

I have a lot of mixed feelings about Sheriff Joe - you should never be able to arrest someone just because you suspect they're here illegally - but he is combating people and groups who WANT people to be here illegally. I'm not sure how you win that battle, especially when everyone in the federal government seems to be opposed to stopping illegal immigration.

You are talking about Congress people of both parties being lobbied and rewarded for getting their lobbyists and those who pay them off, cheap labor.
Cheap for the illegal employer, expensive to the American taxpayer.

One doesn’t not need to be sentenced nor even convicted in order to receive and accept a pardon. Reference back to Ford’s pardon of Nixon. Nixon hadn’t even been charged with anything when his pardon came through. It’s interesting that Ford justified his pardon of Nixon using Burdick v. United States, U.S. Supreme Court decision that suggested that a pardon carried an imputation of guilt and that acceptance carried a confession of guilt. So, if that holds true, Sheriff Joe, by accepting Trump’s pardon will be admitting guilt.
It’s also unsettling that Trump chose Friday to announce the pardon because the impending hurricane would cause more people to watch the news and result in hirer rating for his announcement. Believe it or not, he said that yesterday in the East Room.

Agree with you here. Police are supposed to enforce the laws equally to all. Certainly not based on ethnicity.
