Deuteronomy 31:1 Then Moses went out and spoke these words to all Israel: 2 “I am now a hundred and twenty years old and I am no longer able to lead you. The Lord has said to me, ‘You shall not cross the Jordan.’ 3 The Lord your God himself will cross over ahead of you. He will destroy these nations before you, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua also will cross over ahead of you, as the Lord said. 4 And the Lord will do to them what he did to Sihon and Og, the kings of the Amorites, whom he destroyed along with their land. 5 The Lord will deliver them to you, and you must do to them all that I have commanded you. 6 Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you.”

7 Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors to give them, and you must divide it among them as their inheritance. 8 The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you. Do not be afraid; do not be discouraged.”

Before I lose this thought.... it must have been quite a life for old Moses. I mean he was just an Israelite baby who was supposed to be put to death just because of his lineage. Instead he was put in the Nile. At least there, he had a chance, if the crocs or the other wild animals didn't find him first. He was found, by design, by Pharaoh's daughter. On top of that, he was raised like a prince. He apparently had rage issues. He killed a man with his bare hands. Then he met God.... literally.... burning bush turns into life changing experience.... he met God. Under God's supervision, he took possession of over 2,000,000 people. He led them in the desert for over 40 years. He was their leader and their judge. He talked to God every single day.... God talked to him.... I don't want to lose this thought.... Moses had quite a life..... ok back to the Bible verses.

One thing has always bugged me about the Moses story. I thought it was absolutely rude that Moses didn't get to go to the promised land. Here's a comment from the blueletterbible.org site.

Essentially, at Meribah (Numbers 20:7-12), when Israel complained and cried out for water, Moses misrepresented God. He misrepresented God by lecturing the nation harshly and unnecessarily. Moses misrepresented God by acting as if God needed him to provide water for the people. And Moses both misrepresented and disobeyed God by angrily striking the rock twice, instead of just speaking to the rock as God had told him to.

This may seem an excessively harsh punishment for Moses; after all, with only one slip-up, he now must die short of the Promised Land? But Moses was being judged by a stricter standard because of his leadership position with the nation, and because he had a uniquely close relationship with God. It is right for teachers and leaders to be judged by a stricter standard (James 3:1); though it is unrighteous to hold teachers and leaders to a perfect standard. It is true the people's conduct was worse than Moses' but it is irrelevant.

They put him in the Nile and God fished him out.... it's a different playing field.
