Hillary Wants To Abolish The Electoral College. Is There An In-Between Solution?

The reason Hillary Clinton wants to eliminate the Electoral College is because she lost. It's that simple. If the situation were reversed, with Trump winning the popular vote, and Clinton the electoral, she would not be speaking about the issue.

Setting aside Clinton’s obviously self-motivated reasoning, the question of election reform is one worth discussing. It's not as if there isn't precedent for altering the way in which we elect our representatives. Prior to the ratification of the 17th Amendment in 1913, Senators were selected by state legislatures.

51 Popular Votes

Finally, the EC system is based on a subset of popular votes. Each state (as well as the District of Columbia) holds their individual presidential election, and (aside from Maine and Nebraska) distributes their electoral votes on a winner-take-all basis.

For example, if 51% of Arizona voters cast their ballots for the Republican candidate, that candidate receives all 11 of Arizona’s electoral votes. It's a popular vote in which the individual who takes the majority (or plurality) wins.

We have multiple popular votes housed within the Electoral College system. These subsystems allow for proper representation within each state, as well as representation nationally. In a national popular vote, however, individuals living in less populous states would not have any voice.

Give each state, regardless of population size equal EC votes. The US is a Representative Democratic Government system anyway.

Since the states gave up their voices in the federal government via the Senate, it would be interesting to see them take it back by changing the presidential election to be the vote of the 50 governors

If I was rewriting the while Constitution to start over, I would probably get rid of the Electoral College. However, realistically I don't think its going away soon given political realities so I don't understand harping on it. Lets say you like defensive football. If you could re-write the rules from scratch you may say you should have to get 15 yards to get a first down not 10. But that is not going to happen because the current system is entrenched so why bore people with your obsessiveness about it.

You would?? So instead of Virginia dominating all elections (what the Electoral College was created to prevent), close elections would be decided by New York and California now. If it were not for California's vote tally, Hillary would not have come even close to winning the popular vote.

No thank you! I'm sure it seems like great idea to you far-left socialist types but not to the rest of us..and not to the Founders either.

The thing is that we have changed the Constitution many times. Why do you believe that it is unrealistic to imagine another change?

It's going to take a wooden stake in her heart for her to go away. Perhaps a bucket of water.

Hillary can wish in one hand and #### in the other. Nobody cares what she thinks and it's just her arrogance presuming that anyone does.

Why? I think the electoral system is brilliant - it allows each state, no matter how small, to be represented, and it is crafted in such a way that more populous states have more representatives to keep within the theory of democracy.

If I were to recraft it, I'd go a step further. I'd make it so each state's electoral votes are awarded by voting district and not winner take all. For example, here in Maryland it's three or four districts that decide our elections, effectively leaving everyone else out of the democratic process. Voters in Baltimore and Montgomery County do not have the same interests as western Maryland and Eastern Shore, and yet they are the ones who decide our elections. That's neither fair, nor is it democratic.

Basically, I like this idea (1 EV for getting popular vote within a district/2 EV for getting statewide popular vote), but this could also lead to some egregious results that could be argued as not being fair as well.
For example, here in Maryland it's three or four districts that decide our elections, effectively leaving everyone else out of the democratic process.
Actually, the vote for President in Maryland followed the makeup of the Congressional results (i.e., 7D/1R). Most districts weren't close, although only the results in District 6 were close to 50/50.
Voters in Baltimore and Montgomery County do not have the same interests as western Maryland and Eastern Shore, and yet they are the ones who decide our elections. That's neither fair, nor is it democratic.
I think you could say the same about almost any state. You think the interests of Los Angeles are the same as those in Fresno, or in Detroit and anywhere in the Upper Peninsula?

Yes. Abolish Hillary.

Only a few die hard dykes, and people who made payments to her foundation have any use for her..
If the media would just abolish all stories emanating from her she would quietly slip off into the world of losers that she belongs to.

But, what fun would that be. Hillary is dunskies, and is responsible for the downgrade of the dem party. I love watching her wallow like the pig she is. Actually, pigs are better than she is. What that makes her, I don't know.

A vote is a vote. Why should a vote in Wyoming and Montana count more than a vote in California. Is a Wyoming person inherently superior to a person in New York or California.

The rest of the civilized world follows the one person one vote method, yet its a "far left socalist" thing. Come on now. You like it because it benefits the politicians you like. You can cite other reasons, but one person one vote is a much simpler cleaner rule that better comports to the equality standards society promotes.
