Joshua 1:10 So Joshua ordered the officers of the people: 11 “Go through the camp and tell the people, ‘Get your provisions ready. Three days from now you will cross the Jordan here to go in and take possession of the land the Lord your God is giving you for your own.’”

12 But to the Reubenites, the Gadites and the half-tribe of Manasseh, Joshua said, 13 “Remember the command that Moses the servant of the Lord gave you after he said, ‘The Lord your God will give you rest by giving you this land.’ 14 Your wives, your children and your livestock may stay in the land that Moses gave you east of the Jordan, but all your fighting men, ready for battle, must cross over ahead of your fellow Israelites. You are to help them 15 until the Lord gives them rest, as he has done for you, and until they too have taken possession of the land the Lord your God is giving them. After that, you may go back and occupy your own land, which Moses the servant of the Lord gave you east of the Jordan toward the sunrise.”

16 Then they answered Joshua, “Whatever you have commanded us we will do, and wherever you send us we will go. 17 Just as we fully obeyed Moses, so we will obey you. Only may the Lord your God be with you as he was with Moses. 18 Whoever rebels against your word and does not obey it, whatever you may command them, will be put to death. Only be strong and courageous!”

Joshua has taken charge. In three days they move into the Land of Milk and Honey. This is a land that has resources so plentiful that it takes two men and a pole to carry one cluster of grapes. However, this is Canaan and Canaan is inhabited by giants. When the first scouting party went over into Canaan back forty years before Joshua's big first order.... ten out of the twelve scouts were so terrified by the giants who lived in Canaan, they didn't want to go over. Joshua and another guy named Caleb had enough faith in God to know they could do it..... but they had to wait forty long years for all the doubters to die. For Joshua... this heavy burden was a long time coming.... he had trained under Moses.... he knew the law and he knew what God had done for the Israelites and for Moses. He was ready.

Now, check out verses 12-15. Two and a half tribes had a "special arrangement". They decided they didn't want to live in Canaan. They were delighted with the area east of the Jordan River. They made a "special arrangement" with God through Moses which allowed them to stay there. However, this was no get out of battle free card. The men of fighting age in these two and a half tribes had to go to battle for as long as it took.... and they were good with that.

The Israelites all agreed to follow Joshua. It would be a capital offense to drop the ball.

This was martial law; he who disobeyed the command of his general should be put to death. To this the people agreed, and it was essentially necessary in order that proper discipline should be kept up in this great army. By insubordination their fathers had suffered much in the wilderness; they rejected the authority of Moses, mutinied and made themselves a leader to conduct them back to Egypt. (See Numbers 14:4). And Joshua himself, for attempting to encourage them against their fears, was near being stoned to death. It was necessary, therefore, that they should give him the most positive assurance that they would not act as their fathers had done.

Did you see that.... A reminder that forty years before, Joshua had almost been stoned to death by the men who were afraid of the giants in Canaan. Now he's commander over their sons.... and they are moving out in 3 days! Here we go....
