Joshua 6 Odd Battle Plan

Joshua 6:6 So Joshua son of Nun called the priests and said to them, “Take up the ark of the covenant of the Lord and have seven priests carry trumpets in front of it.” 7 And he ordered the army, “Advance! March around the city, with an armed guard going ahead of the ark of the Lord.”

8 When Joshua had spoken to the people, the seven priests carrying the seven trumpets before the Lord went forward, blowing their trumpets, and the ark of the Lord’s covenant followed them. 9 The armed guard marched ahead of the priests who blew the trumpets, and the rear guard followed the ark. All this time the trumpets were sounding. 10 But Joshua had commanded the army, “Do not give a war cry, do not raise your voices, do not say a word until the day I tell you to shout. Then shout!” 11 So he had the ark of the Lord carried around the city, circling it once. Then the army returned to camp and spent the night there.

12 Joshua got up early the next morning and the priests took up the ark of the Lord. 13 The seven priests carrying the seven trumpets went forward, marching before the ark of the Lord and blowing the trumpets. The armed men went ahead of them and the rear guard followed the ark of the Lord, while the trumpets kept sounding. 14 So on the second day they marched around the city once and returned to the camp. They did this for six days.

So Joshua, son of Nun, who was originally known as Hosia, son of Nun, is now following God's plan even though it seems to be totally ludicrous. Can you imagine?

The Canaanites were great warriors. They heard that God had dried up the River Jordan for them just as He did for that Moses!

I bet they were gossiping like crazy in hushed tones while making their last minute barricades against the approaching army. I bet they were saying things like, "Last time God dried up a river bed for those Israelites to cross, Pharaoh and his whole army were killed. Now those same Israelites have been wandering around the desert for forty years. Why? It had to be so they could sharpen their superpowers!" Their hearts were melting in fear!

Then the Israelites appeared to be attacking and all they did was march around the walls of the city of Jericho a few times and they went home. They didn't try to breech the walls! They didn't fire a single arrow! It would be comical if the Canaanites were't so scared..... and they did it again the next day. I bet those Canaanite guards up on the wall were torn between amusement, confusion, and fear.

Can you imagine the difficulty of this? Several hundred thousand people marching around the city without a word, not even a whisper! There were the priests with their trumpets, those with the ark, the armed men and then the rest of the people. This may have included the women and children as well. If this was the case, the silence may be even a bigger miracle than the walls falling down!

It took courage for Israel to do this; Israel was wide open to attack during this time, and it would have been easy for the people of Jericho to attack them from the high position of the walls.

It took endurance for Israel to do this; the march was for six days, and they had to persist in something that didn't seem to make much sense.

In this, the helplessness of Israel was revealed; through six days of silent marching, they had a good look at the walls that seemed to be impenetrable - they knew that this was a battle bigger than they were.
