That's a serious amount of wind power...

New York taking the lead on large scale offshore wind power...

I like the idea of wind power in concept. But seems like half the turbines I see on land are broken down or shut off. Can't imagine being pelted with salty sea water spray all day will help the MTBF.

That's been one of my beefs too, the cost for repair and maintenance.

I imagine those large ones are more complicated. Computer controlled baffling and motors to move them around, high current transformers, etc. But I built several for fun when I was younger using old car rotors and wooden propellers. I encased the windings and the magnets in epoxy and used shielded bearings, so short of having the blades blown off/broken there was really no maintenance and no expectation that they would break. But for whatever reason these super large high efficiency ones are fragile as hell.

More than fragile, those huge ones are subject to unbelievable stresses. The larger and heavy they are, the greater the stress on any given point and the higher the failure rate.

I would say that's why we let the Europeans spent their capital over the last 30 years (?) refining the technology. They worked out the majority of the design flaws and bugs on their nickel.

Yep. And they are still investing huge sums in anything that increases reliability. And with over 4000 offshore turbines in operation, they've learned a lot.

If you count Greece as part of Europe, you're only off by around 1900 years.

    yeah..practically identical.

But seriously...the billions of dollars invested in the European wind power industry over the last 10 years or so is soon going to be saving developers and our governments a ton of money over here.

We were involved in this project since inception...and the key player - Statoil - figures prominently in the recent lease wins off US eastern coastline. 402MW, 67 wind turbines.....that's a big wind farm.
