How Do Americans Feel About Trump?

Unlike basically every other month since he was inaugurated, President Trump has not dominated the headlines in October. The month began with the most deadly, and thus far inscrutable, mass shooting in modern U.S. history, reigniting the gun control debate and prompting more finger-pointing. But as the nation was still struggling to make sense of the tragedy in Vegas, Hollywood imploded — the "open secret" of Harvey Weinstein's alleged three-decades of sexual harassment, assault and rape taking over the news cycle for a solid week.

Amid all the heartbreak over Vegas and disgust with hypocritical Hollywood, how are Americans feeling about their president? In short, not great. Below is the most recent polling data, beginning with Trump's overall approval numbers, followed by opinion on his handling of the economy and foreign policy, the direction of the country, and finally Congress.

TRUMP JOB APPROVAL

As of October 15, Real Clear Politics' average of the key national polls calculates Trump's overall job approval at -17.1 points: 38.6% approving, 55.7% disapproving — about a 5-point drop from two weeks ago and around his average since May. His best approval rating of the five most recent surveys is 43% (Rasmussen: 43 - 56) and his worst is 36% (Gallup: 36 - 59).

Rasmussen — which surveys only likely voters and thus has been one of the more reliable pollsters — has frequently given Trump more favorable numbers than most other polls, and that proves true again this week. Trump finally broke even in the poll mid-April, at 50 - 50, but slid to the low 40s and even to the high-30s in July. On October 15, the tracking survey shows him at -13 points (43 - 56). The survey continues to find that far more people "strongly" disapprove than approve of his handling of the presidency. Rasmussen provides more details (graph below):

The Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll for Monday shows that 43% of Likely U.S. Voters approve of President Trump’s job performance. Fifty-six percent (56%) disapprove.

The latest figures include 27% who Strongly Approve of the way Trump is performing and 47% who Strongly Disapprove. This gives him a Presidential Approval Index rating of -20. (see trends).

I cannot judge how OTHER Americans judge Mr. Trump, but as for myself, I see a man struggling without help to fix the problems created by the previous administration.
I see a Congress where the Democrats and a majority of Republicans are working against him for political reasons.
I suggest that a major reason for the drop in the polls is because he is finally telling the insane N Korean jack-off to stop the BS or face consequences and facing the reality with Iran that Obama and John Kerry gave away the store with nothing in return.
It's time America was placed first by it's President and it's Congress. A Congress that buys the votes of the unemployed and underemployed while at the same time encouraging the import of people to come here and work cheap. That is work cheap for the corporations and others who hire them. It certainly is not cheap for the American taxpayer.
I have some problems with him. But I have had some problems with every President since Eisenhower, but in all I give him high grades for courage, and for doing what he was elected by the Americans who care about America, to get done. This President faces a liberal public that is unprecedented in their attacks on the laws and decency of America.A liberal education system that seeks Communism or Socialism for America's future. A liberal public that would enslave us with laws and regulations that most Americans abhor.

And were it not for the Democrats, I would vote against the GOP but for this very reason.
They only rarely get the whole enchilada - White House, House and Senate - and for political pettiness, they're blowing it.

I expect it from the RINOs - I wish the party didn't need them, but they do, if only for the powers they gain by being the majority party.
But I expect these to be marginally with the party, and the alternative is to lose the seat outright.
It's the ones who fight him without reasonable alternative solutions because it has to be perfect. They SHOULD have been able to defeat Obamacare - and they still have not.

I hate the premise in Washington that says if I can't get what I want, I'll either sit on my hands - or railroad others into getting it.
Good statesmanship rests on the ability to compromise and make deals -get part of what you want in exchange for giving part of what they want.
No one is willing to do that. The GOP in the House and Senate won't do it at all, and the Democrats play at it but use the press to reframe the dialogue -
the most recent flap with Schumer and Pelosi at the White House being the best example.

The Republicans had a chance to Make America Great again and to spite the man who beat their candidate they sit there picking their nose.

As you said the only reason to vote republican today is to keep Democrats out of office, and even that is marginalized.

The general consensus among my personal friends and people we chat up in bars is that the GOP sucks, but Trump is great.

I believe the GOP will find that out come fund raising time and during the 2018 elections.

Really? Just one more election, and the GOP will get it? They really must be brain dead for not getting it the last election. I mean ---------> Trump!

I think the GOP has proven that it is brain dead. They are clearly stuck on stupid and can't seem to pull their head out. Probably watching too much MSNBC.

He certainly isn't a polished speaker. He sounds just like everyone I come in contact with on a daily basis. Not like a politician or a preacher. He says the stuff that all of us are thinking. "Get him out of here", "Fire the SOBs", "Do your job congress".

Touchy feely is so last administration. Shot and a beer for the house.

He is a terrible speaker and he would be better off using Twitter a lot less. But what he is doing is why I voted for him.

I didn't say they would get it, I said they may find their coffers hurting and a lot less incumbents in office.

I think he is a wonderful speaker (because he's actually speaking his mind, not what some staffer crafted for him) and I love that he uses Twitter. I like a president who speaks to the people instead of just giving a bunch of speeches.

GURP's post isn't worth the time...just another BS source pushing propaganda. But his one from Hijinx, what a mess.

I cannot judge how OTHER Americans judge Mr. Trump, but as for myself, I see a man struggling without help to fix the problems created by the previous administration.

Struggling without help? Wow. Trump has made some of the worst hires possible for his cabinet. Those who are competent (Kelly, McMasters, Tillerson) are undercut by Trump everyday. Trump has done nothing to push his own agenda because he doesn't know what his agenda is. He changes his mind daily. He can't stay focused on a problem. He does nothing to solicit help. Telling people what do and then going to play golf works fine when you are the majority owner of a privately held corp. It is a roadmap to failure for a politician or CEO of a publicly held corp.

I
see a Congress where the Democrats and a majority of Republicans are working against him for political reasons.

Again, Trump has no idea what his agenda is. His solutions or policies change multiple times from the time he wakes up and toilet tweets about an issue to the time he goes to bed.

I suggest that a major reason for the drop in the polls is because he is finally telling the insane N Korean jack-off to stop the BS or face consequences and facing the reality with Iran that Obama and John Kerry gave away the store with nothing in return.

Really? His polls were never got above 50% approval ratings and began tanking immediately. His disapproval rating went higher than approval on Feb 1 and the gap has only widened. https://projects.fivethirtyeight.com/trump-approval-ratings/?ex_cid=rrpromo

Trump doesn't care about you or America. He only cares about marketing his golf courses, wines, Ivanka's clothes etc.

I have some problems with him. But I have had some problems with every President since Eisenhower, but in all I give him high grades for courage, and for doing what he was elected by the Americans who care about America, to get done.

That is kind of interesting. Because other than rubber stamping a Supreme Court Justice and canceling loads of proposed regulations, Trump really hasn't done much.

This President faces a liberal public that is unprecedented in their attacks on the laws and decency of America. A liberal education system that seeks Communism or Socialism for America's future. A liberal public that would enslave us with laws and regulations that most Americans abhor.

You seem to misunderstand the definition of "majority" and "unprecedented" But that is par for the course for a guy to whom English is a second language.

Trump is a carnival barker. His intelligence level and his vocabulary are perfect for you.

See, I 100% agree. I think how he speaks is fantastic. I guess everyone is so used to pre-fab bull####, that it is shocking and often uncomfortable to hear a leader that talks to us, not down to us. Maybe he should reign in the more petty commentary and insults, but man, it makes me howl. I laugh and laugh and laugh. "Pocahontas" is still my favorite. :lmao:
