Judges 2:6 After Joshua had dismissed the Israelites, they went to take possession of the land, each to their own inheritance. 7 The people served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who had seen all the great things the Lord had done for Israel.

This was the time when the Judges began to rule. There are some similar verses at the end of the book called Joshua. There, the writer tells us more about the great things that God had done for Israel’s people. Joshua and some other leaders died, and a new generation of Israel’s people grew up. These people did not know what God had done. They did not obey God. They praised the Baals and the Ashtoreth. Baal was the false god of rain and good crops. ‘Ashtoreth’ is the plural of Astarte, who was the female god of war and good crops. She was the wife of the god Baal. This was how people praised those gods. People had sex with the male and female priests in the temple. They hoped that this would encourage the gods and female gods to do the same. This would make the land produce food. Sometimes the people even sacrificed their children. (They killed their children. In this way, they were making a gift to a god.)
This almost sounds like those Israelites weren't happy with a cluster of grapes so large that they had to carry it on a pole between two strapping men. They would even sacrifice their children! Having sex with the preacher is bad enough but sacrificing their children to a fake god for bigger badder grapes is just unthinkable. What is wrong with these people.
Back in Leviticus 18 I read about children being sacrificed to the god Molek. This was a horrific torture. They'd get this metal "god" red hot and then lay their child in it's arms. The child would scream in pain so they would sing to cover the screaming baby. Humans are gross left to their own inclinations. Here's a picture of Molek.... just one of their many shiny objects.
Seriously, I ask you.... would you put your baby on this thing when it's glowing red hot? Would you sing to cover their screams? What is wrong with these people?
