1 Samuel 14:49 Saul’s sons were Jonathan, Ishvi and Malki-Shua. The name of his older daughter was Merab, and that of the younger was Michal. 50 His wife’s name was Ahinoam daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of the commander of Saul’s army was Abner son of Ner, and Ner was Saul’s uncle. 51 Saul’s father Kish and Abner’s father Ner were sons of Abiel.

52 All the days of Saul there was bitter war with the Philistines, and whenever Saul saw a mighty or brave man, he took him into his service.

This is from Bible.org

For the remainder of Saul’s life there will be conflict, and Saul’s respect for the Philistines can be seen by the fact that he seeks to attach any “valiant man” to his staff. The consequences for Saul’s folly follow him all the days of his reign. As we shall read in chapter 31, Saul and his son Jonathan both die at the hands of the Philistines. How sad that the victory over the Philistines is not complete in this battle which Jonathan began.

Saul is trying to be king of Israel. There are no prior kings to copy... it's uncharted territory. Saul is trying the best he can do.... the problem here is.... Saul doesn't have God doing the heavy lifting.... and God has proven He's willing. So far there has been a horrific thunder clap that sent the Philistines scrambling.... and then there was the earthquake brought on by God when Jonathan went into battle. Saul is trying to be king.... he's just missing a vital element.... God.
