The world’s biggest oilseed processor just confirmed one of the soybean market’s biggest fears: China has essentially stopped buying U.S. supplies amid the brewing trade war.

“Whatever they’re buying is non-U.S.,” Bunge Ltd. Chief Executive Officer Soren Schroder said in a telephone interview Wednesday. “They’re buying beans in Canada, in Brazil, mostly Brazil, but very deliberately not buying anything from the U.S.”

....

In the two weeks ended April 19, China canceled a net 62,690 metric tons of U.S. soybean purchases for the marketing year that ends Aug. 31, U.S. Department of Agriculture data show.

Poor, poor TJ. Always late..always wrong...always out of Metamucil and Pepcid...

U.S. Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin, Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer and others have arrived in Beijing for two days of talks meant to settle the current U.S.-China trade scuffle before it escalates further. That optimism spilled over into the grain markets just ahead of Thursday’s close, sending soybean prices shooting up double digits in the final minutes of the session.
