Preliminary Cause: Accidental - candle fell on floor

Additional Information: The owner was alerted by her alarm system to the fire on the first floor. The first floor was in the middle of renovations at the time. The owner was displaced as a result of the fire and is being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Preliminary Cause: Accidental - Discarded Smoking Materials

Additional Information: The fire was the result of a smoking materials station igniting on the exterior of the building. The fire spread to nearby combustible materials before extending to the building. Employees of the establishment smelled smoke and discovered the fire outside the kitchen. Attempts to extinguish the fire by the employees were unsuccessful prior to the fire department arrival. All restaurant employees and approximately five customers were able to escape the building without injury.

Preliminary Cause: Incendiary - Juvenile ignited a pile of clothes

Additional Information: The fire was contained to the interior of the shed with no extension to the dwelling. One juvenile was charged with setting the fire and released back to the custody of his mother. Prior to this incident, on May 12, 2018, the same juvenile attempted to set fire to an exterior utility closet. St. Mary's County Sheriff's Office responded. However, the juvenile fled the scene prior to their arrival.
