So what do you think is killing social media?

I'm noticing a distinct drop off in participation across all social media platforms. These forums, Twitter, Facebook, Quora, Reddit, TripAdvisor, Yelp, Buzzfeed, Amazon reviews...

My guess is that people are tired of talking to strangers and the various entities have ruined the internet and made social interaction not fun anymore. I see a lot of what I call "bot posts" pushing a political agenda, advertising, and fake news, but the people who are clearly real humans seem to be dwindling. As the internet gets more and more commercialized, you can't be sure if you're reading/interacting with a real person or a paid shill.

As we're bombarded more and more with fake news, fake memes, shills and spammers, we've become cynical and mistrustful. Several people on here have complained that they're sick of politics, let's talk about something else, yet they don't start topics that interest them. It's more that they want to be entertained, not necessarily initiate or participate. I see a crap ton of people on here everyday, yet they lurk and don't actively participate.

Thoughts? What is your participation level on social media (not just this site, but all of them)?

Speaking to Reddit ... since the Election of Trump [shareblue has brigaded the place] moderate and conservative minded people, get out right banned for 'subscribing to' or even just posting in groups un-favored let alone hated by Progressives .

groups completely unrelated to politics ... oh you posted in The_Donald or /r/Conservative ...... boom you are kicked out

I frequent Reddit for :
/r/historyporn,
/r/warshipporn,
/r/DNDNext
/r/mapmaking
/r/PCMaster Race,
/r/Piracy
/r/obscuremedia
/intv
/c126
/c64
/r/pubg
/r/Fallout
/r/HomeServer

same with Facebook --- groups revolving around

Traveller
Dungeons and Dragons
Gammaworld
Space Opera Pulp fiction
Precode Movies
Twilight 2000
GURPS
SciFi TV

in other words NON Politics

I have not been a frequent user/poster on any social media, and it's mostly due to what vrai made mention of - how it seems like a lot of 'bots' out there, pushing whatever agenda-du-jour catches their fancy. (Sorry, fansy.) And I'll readily admit to being more of a lurker, since I rarely have much to contribute that hasn't already been said.

I do like to use the different smilies, though!

Well if they are sick of politics, there are plenty of other subjects in SOMD forums.
I get a bit tired of being called an idiot by other idiots who think they are always right, but that's part of the game.
We all have opinions and many of them stink, but that is no excuse for a person to come here every day with nothing to say except to denigrate the people here.

I think she means this:

I thought so, but outside of her particular observation nothing indicates a drop off in participation.

You mean Chad hasn't had Norton ban you by now?

Not yet. I'm sure it'll happen one day.

I made my first mistake early on in a heated debate of DI vs Piston of mentioning "I liked mine just fine and did well with it!" and the #### hit the fan.

A multi page tag team lecture ensued!

I think I'm on a Heretic list somewhere.

I lurk here and FB. I don't post a lot because I am not compelled to post on every single thread or subject.

Chad's a douche.. He worked for Scotty's Gunsmithing on and off for a few years.
Scotty fired him more than once, and now you see what he's doing part time..
What drives him crazy is, he knows that I know Scott and the Schneider family that owns Atlantic Guns where Scott started as a Gunsmith but he's never figured out who I am.. I grew up with guys that are reps and salesman with HK, Colt and FN and guys the work for a few distributors.
He stated a few times that he knew more about the M16-AR platform than the Army and Marine Corps.. unbeknownst to him in the group was a Colt 25 + year LE salesman standing there laughing at him. What's good is his little followers..
And a plug for Scott, he is a top shelf gunsmith.. he is well worth the wait..
