What does this statement say? if you can read English, you will realize that it doesn't really say much of anything.
China has a fast growing and large economy. They were already going to buy more from the US. This statement only confirms what was already likely to happen. You will note there is no specific amount or time frame. Also, as China has a large and growing economy, it will also naturally increase its exports. Therefore, China increasing imports is no guarantee that our trade deficit with China will decrease.
Both sides agreed to "meaningful" increases in US ag and energy exports. Again, no amount and no timeline. Given that China has effectively stopped purchasing US soybeans due to Trump's idiotic tariff threats, increasing ag exports may have no meaning at all.
The sides want to increase trade in manufactured goods and services. Golly gee whiz! Every country everywhere wants to increase trade in manufactured goods and services.
The last three items are essentially meaningless as they say nothing. All this says is that the two countries will continue to talk. FYI: we've been talking with China about trade for years...decades?
Oh...and in return for all this nothingness...Trump put his idiotic tariff threats on hold.
So China got the tariffs taken off the table and what exactly did we get? A bunch of non-commitments about things that were already going to happen. The two sides agreed to foster increased trade between two countries that are naturally increasing trade between each other. Whoop de doo.
Trump got played...again...maybe he just said "thank you" to the Chinese for the $500M investment in his Indonesia theme park/hotel?...the lack of anything meaningful in the agreement is highlighted by the fact that the press release was issued during the coverage of the Royal wedding when it was assured there would be no "breaking news" coverage. The really, really sad part is Trumpians think his administration actually accomplished something.
