Reminder: Democrats Want To Raise Your Gas Prices On Purpose

With consumer confidence at a 17-year high and economic prospects looking relatively strong, congressional Democrats have taken to grousing about the gas pump as a midterm strategy. “These higher oil prices are translating directly to soaring gas prices,” declared Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer, “something we know disproportionately hurts middle- and lower-income people.”

If this is true, then why have Democrats spent the past two decades advocating for policies that artificially spike fossil fuel prices? If higher energy costs hurt Americans — and thank you, senator, for conceding this point — why have liberals favored increasing gas taxes, inhibiting exploration for fossil fuels (including, in a number of places, banning fracking for less environmentally damaging gas) and capping imports? If higher gas prices disproportionately impact the working class and poor, then why do Democrats push for national schemes designed to create false demand through a fabricated marketplace?

Not a single reporter asked the Democrats who were performing in front of the Exxon sign the other day if higher gas prices might incentivize Americans to switch to subsidized “alternative” energy sources — even though this happens to be the prevailing theory driving much of their energy policy. Shouldn’t Democrats be celebrating the fact that fewer American were driving on Memorial Day? I thought we were facing an apocalyptic situation here.

Paranoia is strong around here

President Barack Obama’s Energy secretary unwittingly created a durable GOP talking point in September 2008 when he talked to The Wall Street Journal about the benefits of having gasoline prices rise over 15 years to encourage energy efficiency.

“Somehow,” Chu said, “we have to figure out how to boost the price of gasoline to the levels in Europe.”

Sure, shortbus...sure.

Gas prices in California are about $4.19 now, just about a dollar higher than here.
I believe that is because of greater taxes.

Fewer drivers on Memorial Day?

More than 41.5 million Americans will travel this Memorial Day weekend, nearly 5 percent more than last year and the most in more than a dozen years, according to AAA.

The same stat is reported in numerous places...

...bringing prices in line with the rest of the modern world...

Now, see, if you had said, "the taxes on gasoline in the United States are not based on the cost of the gasoline purchased, thus fluctuating with the oil prices and such. No, the taxes on gasoline are based on the number of gallons bought. Even pickup trucks are well into the 20 mpg range now, and there are few but some electric vehicles out there (which, of course, pay nothing towards road maintenance), so the dollars brought in on gasoline taxes have actually dropped when compared to the number of miles driven on the roads those taxes are meant to maintain. Therefore, it is reasonable to try and increase road maintenance revenue in order to keep our ability to move about the country freely and easily - for personal as well as commerce reasons, not to mention the strategic defense capabilities of the Eisenhower Interstate System", then I would have thought you maybe thought through your position and came up with some viable reason our government should reluctantly but necessarily artificially raise the cost of gasoline - an act which everyone (now) admits is detrimental to the economy.

But, no, you had to go with "in line with the rest of the modern world." I do not understand why you would think it is important that the American economy is damaged in some way for some perceived "fairness" with other countries. Do you feel that way about taxes on business? For example, our business tax rate is approximately 21% at the federal level, but Ireland's is approximately 12.5%. Is it fair to lower that? The average monthly disposable salary (after tax) in the United States is approximately $3,500, but in Cuba it is $25 - should we force businesses to lower income rates to equalize our countries?

Try thinking, Sap. Please. It will make discussions with you enjoyable for the intellectual challenge instead of as a way to blow off anger towards stupidity instead of the #######s around people that really need to have it at them, but I like to stay out of jail.
