Billions in U.S. solar projects shelved after Trump panel tariff
(Reuters) - President Donald Trump’s tariff on imported solar panels has led U.S. renewable energy companies to cancel or freeze investments of more than $2.5 billion in large installation projects, along with thousands of jobs, the developers told Reuters.

That’s more than double the about $1 billion in new spending plans announced by firms building or expanding U.S. solar panel factories to take advantage of the tax on imports.

The tariff’s bifurcated impact on the solar industry underscores how protectionist trade measures almost invariably hurt one or more domestic industries for every one they shield from foreign competition. Trump’s steel and aluminum tariffs, for instance, have hurt manufacturers of U.S. farm equipment made with steel, such as tractors and grain bins, along with the farmers buying them at higher prices.

White House officials did not respond to a request for comment.

Trump announced the tariff in January over protests from most of the solar industry that the move would chill one of America’s fastest-growing sectors.

Aren't tariffs just GRAND?!?! Wait till the tariffs start getting passed along in the form of price increases!

Two points here.

1. I recently have undergone RF nerve ablation for two places in my back, and expect to do two more. A bit of a painful process while the place the RF needles in the right place, and then a week or more of soreness. But the payoff is a year or more with no lower back pain. Sometimes you have to take some pain up front to save more pain later.

2. One persons "protectionist" measures are someone elses levelling of the playing field.

So, you didn't vote for AMERICA FIRST. That explains why you can't understand why Trump's actions were the right thing to do.

He's a part of the Democrats "MASSA" platform.

The solar industry is still in the emerging stage and not really ready for prime time.
Because yes, it's renewable and yeah, it's kinda free - but so far the upfront costs and everything associated with maintaining and
creating it does not make it all that cost effective - compared to other means of creating energy.
As a very liberal friend of mine once pointed out - you just can't beat digging a hole in the ground and pumping energy out (oil).

What's strange to me is, I had this very conversation with a classmate -- in high school.
Basically, you still can't get enough energy from solar to power your home - and forty years later, it's still true.

The irony is - that classmate went on to MIT and founded Solyndra. Yeah. I knew the guy.
Chess team. Math team. Big brother was one of my friends.

The REASON we push solar is "green". It doesn't pollute. The sun isn't going away.
The problem is, our energy requirements keep going up, and solar technology still isn't getting anywhere close
to converting most or all of the energy it gets into electricity. Not even close. And while a power plant or
hydroelectric dam or even an old generator might work for decades - solar panels still have a comparatively short
life. And they all run, rain or shine, day or night.

So I'm not weeping over solar - not until it's ready to compete with the big boys.

Just thinking. Why are we importing solar panels?
We can't make them here?
Does this mean we should start making them here, or are other countries so much farther advanced that imported solar panels are better.

Because they are produced cheaper overseas. The cheaper panels allowed a solar boom in the US, creating thousands of jobs. Some panels are manufactured and/or assembeled in the US already.

These things are related.

There's also the environmental aspect of manufacturing. Not exactly green...
https://news.nationalgeographic.com...r-panel-manufacturing-sustainability-ranking/

Fabricating the panels requires caustic chemicals such as sodium hydroxide and hydrofluoric acid, and the process uses water as well as electricity, the production of which emits greenhouse gases. It also creates waste. These problems could undercut solar's ability to fight climate change and reduce environmental toxics.
Varying regulations and manufacturing practices make it difficult to get standardized data about the environmental footprint of photovoltaic panels. A study released in May by Northwestern University and Argonne National Laboratory found that the carbon footprint of a panel from China is twice that of one from Europe, because China has fewer environmental standards and more coal-fired power plants.
