Angela Merkel has pushed back against Donald Trump’s extraordinary tirade against Germany on the first day of the Nato summit in Brussels, denying her country was “totally controlled” by Russia and saying it made its own independent decisions and policies.

In less blunt language than the US president’s, the German chancellor made the point that she needed no lessons in dealing with authoritarian regimes, recalling she had been brought up in East Germany when it had been part of the Soviet Union’s sphere of influence.

Arriving at Nato headquarters only hours after Trump singled out Germany for criticism, Merkel said: “I have experienced myself how a part of Germany was controlled by the Soviet Union. I am very happy that today we are united in freedom, the Federal Republic of Germany. Because of that we can say that we can make our independent policies and make independent decisions. That is very good, especially for people in eastern Germany.”

Kinda makes you wonder who was responsible for uniting them doesn't it?

Well If Merkel hit Trump--it was a glancing blow that Trump probably laughed at.

Trump was absolutely in the right to throw down on Merkle and Germany for dissing tyheir partners and dancing with the devil. Merkle is in her right to handle international affairs for her sovereign country as she sees fit. It's way past time for Europe to foot the vast majority of the expense for their defense and economies and not suck off the US taxpayer teat..

Might want to check your slip...your ignorance and stupidity is showing.

Marxist and Socialist economic policies don't work. Coupled with bad decisions by the Soviets, simple economics did the Soviets in more than anything the US did.

But it could have taken far longer to occur. ;-) Reagan put the match under it.

Reagan bankrupted the USSR. Trying to keep up with Star Wars broke the Soviet economy, leading to loosening their grip on the east bloc. They could not afford putting down uprisings in those countries, and those decrepit economies could not survive without Soviet assistance. That opened the floodgates for open defiance. History that is not taught in schools.

Wow.

Only took 70 years.

Intentional effort to bankrupt the Soviet Union broke their lock on Eastern Europe.

How so?

Reagan bankrupted the USSR. Trying to keep up with Star Wars broke the Soviet economy, leading to loosening their grip on the east bloc. They could not afford putting down uprisings in those countries, and those decrepit economies could not survive without Soviet assistance. That opened the floodgates for open defiance. The space race certainly played a part, but Reagan did not bankrupt the USSR, the USSR did. Reagan played a part by They, not the US, chose to ramp up defense spending to 27% of GDP, maintained a stagnant economy, and a ####ty political system. The elites got richer, and the poor got poorer. The USSR spending their money on defense (to match the US) and the space race, along with trying to centralize agriculture and production, meant food shortages and goods shortages. Young people began rejecting Socialist and Marxist economic policies, uprisings happened (due in part to Gorbachev's glasnost and perestroika policies), the Berlin Wall fell, and Yeltsin eventually took over after an attempted coup by the Communists.

Simple economics made the USSR fall.

This very common assumption that the West somehow succeeded in causing the collapse of the Soviet Union winning the Cold War is DEAD WRONG . The plain and simple fact is that the Cold War ended by its own accord not even by negotiation to the advantage of both sides, but because of sheer economics.

You were not even born then. I was a rocket/missile propulsion engineer for Army and Navy systems. Those were some amazing years, working with Reagan's massive defense buildup and watching the Soviets fail to keep up. And oh my...the absolutely amazing lengths they went to to try and keep up....to this day I'm still astonished at the sheer depth and scope of their naval and aerospace programs of the time... ;-)
