Trump gets NATO members to spend more on defense

President Trump’s intense pressure on fellow NATO member countries to spend more on defense paid off Thursday with countries committing to spend $33 billion this year.

NATO members also committed to accelerating the timetable to reach the agreed upon spending level of 2 percent of GDP, Mr. Trump said at a press conference at the NATO summit in Brussels.

“Everyone has agreed to substantially up their commitment,” he said on the second day of the summit.

Wait a minute. Are you saying that everything Tranny posted in the other thread about the NATO Summit is untrue?

France said immediately after the conference that no new accords have been made, they are only looking to meet the 2% they originally agreed on.

France happens to be one of the few that's spending close to the agreed target....I think Maccaroni was anxious to get out in front of the story for home consumption..lest any of his constituents thing that he'd agreed to "up" France's contributions.

You do understand that this is the EXACT same thing Trump said when he left the NATO meeting LAST YEAR...and he was LYING then...why do you think he is telling the truth NOW???

Trump cannot guarantee what other countries will do.
What he can guarantee is what we will do.

He says we are considering pulling out of NATO.

I am cool with that. Let them look out for themselves.

I'm down with leaving if they do not immediately meet their FAIR share of the costs. Unfortunately, that would eliminate a lot of very choice duty assignments and billets in lots of really cool countries. If we no longer belong to NATO, no need for our troops to be there UNLESS the host country foots the entire bill, right?

Can anyone explain why we don't just cut back our contribution in terms of percentage of GDP? The US contributes 3.6% of GDP, the next highest is Greece at 2.4% and the average of the 28 other NATO countries is 1.32%.

We do not contribute 3.6 (or 3.5) % GDP to NATO. That's our entire defense budget. We cover roughly 22% of the direct NATO budget. Germany is next at 14%..UK at 10% and so on..

Exactly. Hopefully others can realize that simple concept. It covers ALL our expenses around the world, with a disproportionate amount going to NATO in relation to what the rest of NATO members pay for said agreement.

The real cost disparities come about when indirect costs arise due to actual NATO operations. Heck..we're the ones with all the aircraft carriers and most of the heavy-lift air capabilities..for starters.

And jeepers creeper!!...I had no idea that new NATO headquarters was such a massive edifice!!

Back in the "good ole days" of the roaring 80s, there were numerous NATO "special working groups" or "SWGs" involved in all kinds of fun joint development or research. I was involved in several SWG6 programs that were focused on advanced marine vehicles. We built large models...demonstrators...test craft..prototypes..we traveled a lot...ate and drank a lot....good times. The Germans, Brits, Danes, Swedes and Norwegians especially.

Hell, these days we're lucky if the NATO Navies exchange a liaison officer or two.
