Should College Be The Only Route To Pro Sports?

Why should the benefits of organized sports be limited to the intelligent or wealthy?

Are smarter people better at playing sports? Are Trade School students less capable?

Are students in Trade School too busy for sports than University students?

Would you support the creation of a non college answer to the NCAA? Or reform the NCAA?

With the liberals being so concerned with equality and being a sizable portion of the population why haven't they spoken out in support for sports equality?

Are you not aware of people getting into professional sports without going to college?

N7sphincter must be blissfully unaware of who most college athletes on scholarships actually are...and where they came from. "Rich and intelligent" is not an accurate description of a large number of them.

Agree 100% - some are very smart, an awful lot are on athletic scholarships. But, for goodness sake the basic premise of the question is invalid since there's no requirement to be a college athlete to get into pro sports, and it is not even close to unheard of that pro athletes are recruited from places other than college.

Many schools have club level sports. Just to give students an outlet for recreation. I doubt any of them have serious thoughts of making a profession out of their chosen sport.

The intelligent ones realize that making it in pro sports is a very long shot so they make a plan for the future without sports by going to school (college or trade). If they make it in pro sports when their career is over they have a new path. The stupid ones decide at 12 that they don't need no skoolin cause I gonna be a pro atlete or a rapper and make no plan for the what if.

Don't most baseball pros come up through the farm system directly from high school?

My son played pro baseball for 2 seasons in Europe. He had a few teammates from the Dominican Republic. They sign these kids at 15- 16. Ship them off to Arizona or some other warm weather area. Pay them $600 a month while housing & feeding them. They practice as a job while US kids are in high school learning math and English. And this is why MLB has an explosion of latino players. 4-5 years of playing baseball for 10 months solid while they develop their skills.

Read Odd Man Out by Matt McCarthy. He was a Yale grad that ended up with a short minor league career. He tells the stories of his immature latino teammates and their zany antics.
