Marie always wanted a drive-thru service. But permitting at Planning and Zoning was always giving her the runaround. So she started construction in defiance of those bureaucratic buffoons.

Marie's Diner to begin reconstruction as soon as Friday

Marie’s Diner, a La Plata landmark and staple of breakfast-goers every weekend, is beginning the rebuilding process after Monday night’s car accident that sent four people to the hospital.

Owner Robert Cooper said he is in the process of obtaining permits from the town and Charles County for construction and has been working closely with an engineer and an architect. The damage from the SUV that barreled into the front window of the restaurant was extensive, though Cooper wasn’t sure how much work would be required. The owner was glad no one was critically injured and vowed to reopen as soon as possible.

“We’re gonna fix all the damage and repair everything,” Cooper said. “We should be submitting for permits [Thursday] and go from there — try to move as quickly as we can.”

The accident occurred late Monday night, when, according to first responders, the 67-year-old driver of the vehicle appeared to step on the accelerator instead of the brake, as reported in this newspaper. One employee and two customers were taken for medical care, along with the driver, per a La Plata Police Department press release. None of the victims were deemed to be in critical condition, though LPPD Capt. Chris Becker did not have any further information at this time on those involved or on the details of the accident.
