Revelation 1:7 “Look, he is coming with the clouds,”(b)
and “every eye will see him,
even those who pierced him”;
and all peoples on earth “will mourn because of him.”[c]
So shall it be! Amen.

8 “I am the Alpha and the Omega,” says the Lord God, “who is, and who was, and who is to come, the Almighty.”

b. Revelation 1:7 Daniel 7:13
c. Revelation 1:7 Zech. 12:10

The commentary this morning is from the easy English site.

Verse 7 Jesus is coming again to this earth. Every eye will see him. This reference comes from the Old Testament. It is in the book of Zechariah. People will look upon the one whom they have pierced (Jesus). To pierce means to make a hole in something with a pointed object. They will be very sad. It will be like one who cries about the death of a first son. This refers to David’s family and the people living in Jerusalem (Zechariah 12:10-13:1). Now all the peoples of the earth will be sad because of Jesus. We are all responsible for the death of Christ. Our sin has made us responsible.

This is how it will be! ‘So shall it be!’ ‘Amen’ puts together Greek and Hebrew words of agreement. Amen is a word of agreement. It is not glad about the defeat of the people of the world. The wicked will suffer defeat. The Amen is glad about the victory of goodness over evilness. There will be final victory for Christians who have suffered so much.

Verse 8 God introduces himself as ‘the Alpha and Omega’. Alpha is the first letter of the Greek alphabet. ‘Omega’ is the last letter. In English it would be, ‘I am A and Z’. God created all things. He is the one who will end everything. He is the beginning of history. He is the end of history. He is the Lord of all that comes in between. He is the Lord King of all the ages. No person, no ruler, no country can oppose the Lord King. A person who opposes him will never win. Nine times in this book, God has the name ‘Almighty’. This means that nobody can oppose God’s power. His power is very great. He can use his power in any way that he chooses.

We're still in the greeting of the letter. First John told us he's penning the letter but it's Jesus who is the author. Now John's describing the reason for the letter. Jesus is coming back.... everyone will know it's Him.... people will definitely wish they had listened.... God is everything... God can do anything He so desires.... and Jesus is about to prove it.

Do you see the part in the commentary about the death of David's first son? We've read about that. David was bored at home while his troops were out fighting. He saw Bathsheba bathing on a roof top below. He took Bathsheba, in spite of the fact she was married to one of his soldiers. When she became pregnant with David's son... David brought her husband home from the battle so that he could sleep with his wife and they could pretend the baby was his. That didn't work, the husband was too good a soldier to be home making whoopee while his fellow soldiers were dying. So David had to send him back to the battle and have him murdered. Bathsheba had a son.... but God told David that son would die. David cried, begged, prayed, and fasted for the life of his son.... but it didn't work. David's son paid the debt for the sins of David and Bathsheba. That's the kind of mourning this verse is talking about.... the loss of a son is something we might begin to fathom. People are going to be sorry they didn't choose the right path while they had the chance.

Now verse 8 can be a tad bit confusing. See, this letter is about Jesus. Remember.... Jesus was there when God made the universe. It says here that He's going to be there at the end of the universe too. He's been, is, and will be.... AND since He's God's son... He can do anything He so desires. So.... in verse 8.... it's saying Jesus is the Lord God.

This quote is from gotquestions.org.

Jesus is the Alpha and Omega, the first and last, the beginning and the end. Only God incarnate could make such a statement. Only Jesus Christ is God incarnate.

Now remember.... God can do anything He wants to do.... it's important that we remember.... God is in control...not humans... God!
