PORTAGE, Ind. – A school bus driver was arrested and is accused of letting children as young 11 driver the school bus.

Authorities said she let three of her students take turns driving the school bus down a rural road near Valparaiso. The student were 11, 13 and 17.

When I was a kid growing up way out in the sticks in the 60s, my elementary school bus driver would let several of us "older" kids take turns shifting gears for him. Yep..buses had manual transmissions back then, and a gear shift coming up from the floor easily 3 feet or more.. He never let us take the wheel though..he'd just expect us to throw it in to the right gear when we saw his foot push the clutch in.
