Revelation 5:6 Then I saw a Lamb, looking as if it had been slain, standing at the center of the throne, encircled by the four living creatures and the elders. The Lamb had seven horns and seven eyes, which are the seven spirits[a] of God sent out into all the earth.

a. Revelation 5:6 That is, the sevenfold Spirit

There is a lot of commentary about this verse. It's fairly graphic. I googled "how to slaughter a lamb". The accepted practice is to slit the animal's throat. We know that didn't happen to Jesus. He was beaten, nailed to a cross so He would slowly, shamefully [naked for all to see] suffocate, then pierced in the side.

When I think of these verses... I think first of the relationship John had with Jesus. They were friends. John's friend Jesus had been murdered. Every single time John thinks of Jesus.... somewhere in that thought is the feeling of love, loss, compassion, passion, and horror. John knew in his earthly brain Jesus died but then.... Jesus had "just appeared" in the upper room.... Jesus ate fish with them... and then Jesus walked with them and talked about the crucifixion.... and then Jesus appeared in God's Boardroom.... at the very moment that God is looking for someone qualified to open that Scroll with Seven Seals.

I know it's almost impossible to fathom... but ponder this for a moment.... how would you describe the arrival of your best friend at God's Living Throne at just that moment. How would you describe the magnificence of the victory over death that must have been so obvious in the Lamb's appearance. John says He was "looking as if it had been slain". There were nail holes in His hands and a cut in His side. He would have held His hands out to display those wounds.

The question is asked, “Who is worthy to open the book.” And the answer comes back, “The Lion of the tribe of Judah hath prevailed.” The phrase “Hath prevailed” is the same word as the “overcometh” addressed to each of the seven churches. Revelation 2:7, 11, 17, 26; 3:5, 12, 21. Because Christ has overcome sin, when He dwells in us, we too will overcome. Hebrews 2:18.

Christ is called the “Lion of the tribe of Judah,” representing His victory and kingly strength; but He appears as a sacrificial lamb. This mighty Lion conquered sin in our behalf by humbling Himself to become the Lamb that was slain for our sins. Romans 8:3; Philippians 2:5-8. That is why He alone is worthy to open the seals. To those who seek His mercy with repentance and confession, He is still the Lamb who takes away our sin. To those who persistently refuse Him, He will one day appear as a lion.

“Seven” is the number of perfection, and “horns” represents power. Thus, the “seven horns” are a symbol of Christ’s perfect power to save and deliver. There are none who are too sinful or apparently hopeless for Jesus’ power to save. The “seven eyes” represent the Holy Spirit and the all-knowing vision of God. Proverbs 15:3. In all that we endure Jesus sees and understands. He promises that He will make all circumstances result in good for those who love Him. Romans 8:28.

So... there's this scroll with seven seals on it. It has the plan for the earth and all its inhabitants. There's only one way this scroll get's opened. The seals can only be broken by someone who conquered the one consequence humans have been dealing with since the Garden of Eden. Humans die. God didn't want that to be the case... God wanted people to walk with and talk with for forever. When the humans listened to Satan... they started this ball rolling.... they started dying and there was only one way to stop that.... someone had to get up and walk away from death all on their own. Jesus is the only one who has ever accomplished that. When God left Jesus on the cross... IMHO... it was to ensure that Jesus conquered death all by Himself without Dad's help.

So now... Jesus is standing in front of the Living Throne of God, the four beasts that live in that throne [the one with the lion face, ox face, human face, and eagle face] are on hold... wait something big is about to happen here. Everything is on hold until it's decided.... is this the guy who can open those seven seals?
