2 Kings 11:4 In the seventh year Jehoiada sent for the commanders of units of a hundred, the Carites and the guards and had them brought to him at the temple of the Lord. He made a covenant with them and put them under oath at the temple of the Lord. Then he showed them the king’s son. 5 He commanded them, saying, “This is what you are to do: You who are in the three companies that are going on duty on the Sabbath—a third of you guarding the royal palace, 6 a third at the Sur Gate, and a third at the gate behind the guard, who take turns guarding the temple— 7 and you who are in the other two companies that normally go off Sabbath duty are all to guard the temple for the king. 8 Station yourselves around the king, each of you with weapon in hand. Anyone who approaches your ranks(b) is to be put to death. Stay close to the king wherever he goes.”

9 The commanders of units of a hundred did just as Jehoiada the priest ordered. Each one took his men—those who were going on duty on the Sabbath and those who were going off duty—and came to Jehoiada the priest. 10 Then he gave the commanders the spears and shields that had belonged to King David and that were in the temple of the Lord. 11 The guards, each with weapon in hand, stationed themselves around the king—near the altar and the temple, from the south side to the north side of the temple.

12 Jehoiada brought out the king’s son and put the crown on him; he presented him with a copy of the covenant and proclaimed him king. They anointed him, and the people clapped their hands and shouted, “Long live the king!”

b. 2 Kings 11:8 Or approaches the precincts

This is from the easy English site.

Athaliah ruled for 6 years. Jehu had made the people in Israel stop worshipping Baal. He had removed from Israel the things that people used in that worship. But Athaliah established the worship of Baal in Judah. All this time, Joash was hiding in the temple.

Jehoiada led the revolution against Athaliah. He was the right person to do that. Jehoiada was the chief priest. His wife was the former King Jehoram’s daughter. Jehoiada made secret plans with the leaders of the army. He arranged the rebellion to happen on the Sabbath, when there were more soldiers on duty. Some soldiers were on duty in the new week. They began their work in the morning. The other soldiers did not stop their work until the evening.

Jehoiada told the soldiers to protect the young king and he told them to guard the temple. When all the guards were on duty, Jehoiada brought out Joash, the king. He put the crown on King Joash. He gave the book to the king. The book showed what the king must do (Deuteronomy 17:14-20). Jehoiada poured olive oil on him. That act showed that the king had received God’s Spirit. The people clapped their hands and they greeted the king.

Boy people did a lot of hiding in the Bible. Someone should do a study. Joash has had a really sheltered life. He was raised in the castle but he was in the furniture storage room the whole time. I wonder what he thought when he finally got to go outside. Guess it wasn't a whole lot of difference. Everywhere he went now.. he had to have a full body guard attachment. How can a kid play with six men watching his every move? Poor kid.... But on the up side.... this child is the great great whatever grandfather of Jesus the Messiah and Savior. AND Judah has a new king.

Jehoiada sent and brought captains: Jehoiada was a godly man who was concerned with restoring the throne of David to the line of David, and taking it away from this daughter of Ahab and Jezebel.

On the Sabbath: Jehoiada chose the Sabbath for the day of the coup, because that was the day when the guards changed their shifts and they could assemble two groups of guards at the temple at the same time without attracting attention.

He made a covenant with them and took an oath from them in the house of the LORD: From the place where the oath was made and the context of the oath, we learn that the worship of the true God was not dead in Judah. These captains and bodyguards and escorts could respond to their responsibility before the LORD.

And showed them the king's son: This was a dramatic moment. For six years everyone believed there were no more surviving heirs of David's royal line and there was no legitimate ruler to displace the wicked Athaliah. The secret had to be secure, because the king's son would be immediately killed if his existence were revealed. The captains and bodyguards and escorts must have been shocked by the sight of this six-year old heir to the throne.

One reason Athaliah was able to reign for six years was that no one knew any alternative. Many people live under the reign of Satan because they don't really know there is a legitimate king ready to take reign in their life.

The priest gave the captains of hundreds the spears and shields which had belonged to King David, that were in the temple of the LORD: It was fitting for these soldiers who would set the heir of David's royal line back on the throne of Judah to use these weapons which had belonged to King David.

Well there's a new king on the throne in Judah.... and he's the last of the line of King David.... thanks to the worship of Baal... God's chosen humans have almost destroyed God's plan for the Salvation of the Earth. Athaliah only did it so she could rule Judah herself. She had her own agendas to get passed. Her son was her ticket to fame.... she would rule Judah while that baby stayed in the bed room. Good thing Jehoiada stepped in to save the king. Long live the kid king.
