2 Kings 11:17 About this time Hazael king of Aram went up and attacked Gath and captured it. Then he turned to attack Jerusalem. 18 But Joash king of Judah took all the sacred objects dedicated by his predecessors—Jehoshaphat, Jehoram and Ahaziah, the kings of Judah—and the gifts he himself had dedicated and all the gold found in the treasuries of the temple of the Lord and of the royal palace, and he sent them to Hazael king of Aram, who then withdrew from Jerusalem.

19 As for the other events of the reign of Joash, and all he did, are they not written in the book of the annals of the kings of Judah? 20 His officials conspired against him and assassinated him at Beth Millo, on the road down to Silla. 21 The officials who murdered him were Jozabad son of Shimeath and Jehozabad son of Shomer. He died and was buried with his ancestors in the City of David. And Amaziah his son succeeded him as king.

Budweiser has a new ad out. I watch football with hubby and this is one of those commercials I wish I had left the room for.... anyway... in this particular commercial, the king of the little Bud kingdom has invited a neighboring king over. The neighboring king puts down everything about the little Bud kingdom. The queen of the little Bud kingdom asks the king... "Why did we invite them?" to which the king of the little Bud kingdom says "We're raiding their castle and we need the diversion."

So in these verses, Azael king of Aram [Syria today] is about to raid Jerusalem. So the kid king Joash paid him off in gold. He took the gold from the Temple and the palace. Whoops.... as I read it.... little kid king Joash isn't supposed to be giving away the stuff in the Temple. That's not his to give. He should have asked God.

This is from enduringword.com.

Then Hazael set his face to go up to Jerusalem: At this time, the kingdom of Syria attacked Judah with an inferior army, but God used them as an instrument of judgment against the disobedient Joash. King Joash was wounded in a battle outside of Jerusalem.

2 Chronicles 24:23-24 tells the story: So it happened in the spring of the year that the army of Syria came up against him; and they came to Judah and Jerusalem, and destroyed all the leaders of the people from among the people, and sent all their spoil to the king of Damascus. For the army of the Syrians came with a small company of men; but the LORD delivered a very great army into their hand, because they had forsaken the LORD God of their fathers. So they executed judgment against Joash.

And Jehoash king of Judah took all the sacred things… and sent them to Hazael king of Syria: Instead of trusting God, Jehoash traded prior blessing – the sacred treasures of the temple – to protect his capital and kingdom against the attacking Syrians.

He was in a difficult place: wounded, with an attacking and successful army bearing down on Jerusalem. He found it hard to trust God in this difficult place because he had stopped trusting God in easier circumstances long before.

Now the rest of the acts of Joash: There is no record of repentance on Joash’s part. He never came back to or fulfilled his bright early promise.

His servants arose and formed a conspiracy, and killed Joash: This is startling, and shows that the blessing of God long before vanished from the compromised king who began so well, but failed to finish well.

Oh I get it.... When Hazael king of Aram [Syria] came to town.... Joash paid Hazael off so he left for a while.... but there wasn't any money left for the troops. So those soldiers from Judah killed Joash. Right?
