With little attention paid here in the US, because we have no offshore wind industry of note, GE announced the development of their next-generation 12mW wind turbine and their competitors, Vestas and Siemens, followed that quickly with announcements that they were pursuing similar goals, and both are already producing models near 10mW that can be scaled up..

Now along comes our hapless Dept. of Energy with pockets full of US taxpayer dollars, wanting to fund the "development" of >10mW wind turbines with that money..... Wait...what??

The projects will bring forward a lightweight, more efficient wind turbine drivetrain system – gearbox and generator, or direct drive generator – that minimizes the use of rare earth magnets and contributes to the scaling of wind turbine power capacities beyond 10MW.

Good grief. Maybe they'll fund the "development" of the internal combustion engine next...or steam boilers...

I'm sure all the major turbine manufacturers can do better than 12 milliWatt (mW) without much effort; 12 megaWatt (MW) may be more difficult. Spelling matters here, although I knew what you (or whoever) meant.

Regardless, it's plausible that our DoE is actually willing to spend money on > 10 milliWatt efforts. :sarcasm:

They'd be great backup generators to useful power plants! :yay:
