Hancock Elevator Dropped From 95th To 11th Floor

CHICAGO (CBS)—It took nearly three hours to rescue six people stuck in an elevator in Chicago’s fourth-tallest building early Friday.

A broken hoist rope caused the express elevator to malfunction while guests who had just left the Signature Room on the 95th floor rode down toward the lobby. The elevator and two others have since been closed to the public while repairs are made and investigators figure out what happened.

Lol... Traction ( cable ) elevators are counter weighted and actually fall in the up direction not down. This elevator never over speeded in the down direction, it it had the governor would have tripped and the safety's would have been applied within a tooth or so of the elevator overspending.
Like the article says, a traction will have more than one cable, the reason for multiple cables is so the geared or gearless drive machines do not slip traction when starting or stopping.
