When I saw the verses for this morning.... I thought... oh man.... another list..... how in the world am I going to find a comment on a list! Sure enough.... the easy English site has a lot to say about the list.

Levi had three sons Gershon, Kohath and Merari. Kohath had 4 sons including Amram. Amram was the father of Aaron, Moses and Miriam. All the priests came from the family of Aaron. Aaron was the first chief priest. His son Eleazar became the next chief priest. Then the role (job) of chief priest passed from father to son until the time of the exile. But some of the chief priests came from the family of Ithamar who was a son of Aaron. So, this is not a complete list of the chief priests.

This is not a full list of the family of Levi. Levi went to Egypt with his father and brothers. His three sons were with him then. It was 400 years later that Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt. Often in the Bible, the word ‘son’ means ‘from the family’. So, the ‘father’ could be an ancestor rather than the actual father. Amram the father of Moses could not have been the son of Kohath.

The first two sons of Aaron were Nadab and Abihu. They died as a punishment. They did what was wrong. So the LORD killed them (Leviticus 10:1-2). Because of this Eleazar, the third son, became the chief priest.

Zadok was the chief priest in the time of David (about 1000 BC). The other chief priest at this time was Abiathar who belonged to the family of Ithamar.

Azariah son of Ahimaaz became the chief priest at the time of Solomon (about 970 BC). Some time later Azariah the son of Johanan served in Solomon’s temple.

Hilkiah discovered the book of the law that God had given to Moses (2 Kings 22:8). Because of this, King Josiah tried to turn the people back to their God.

Nebuchadnezzar ordered the death of Seraiah in Riblah town (2 Kings 25:18-21). But his son went into exile. While in Babylon, Jehozadak had a son Jeshua. Jeshua came back to Jerusalem in about 538 BC (Ezra 2:2). He was then the chief priest.

Now GodVine offers a little more on these verses....

And this is perhaps an additional proof that the author was a priest, felt much for the priesthood, and took care to give the genealogy of the Levitical and sacerdotal families, from the most correct tables; for with such tables we may presume he was intimately acquainted.

Eleazar begat Phinehas - As the high priesthood continued in this family for a long time, the sacred historian confines himself to this chiefly, omitting Nadab and Abihu, and even the family of Ithamar.

Ahitub begat Zadok - Through this person the high priesthood came again into the family of Eleazar.

Ahimaaz begat Azariah - It must, apparently, be this Azariah, and not the son of Johanan 1 Chronicles 6:10, who was high priest at the dedication of Solomon's Temple. For Zadok, who lived into the reign of Solomon 1 Kings 4:4 cannot have been succeeded by a great-great-grandson. The notice in 1 Chronicles 6:10, which is attached to the second Azariah, must, beyond a doubt, belong properly to the first.

Johanan - Supposed to be the same as Jehoiada.

Executed the priest's office - Probably this refers to the dignified manner in which Azariah opposed King Uzziah, who wished to invade the priest's office, and offer incense in the temple. See 2 Chronicles 26:17, 2 Chronicles 26:18.

Ahitub - Between Amariah and Hilkiah 1 Chronicles 6:13 this genealogy is most certainly defective, as it gives three generations only for a period for which nine generations are furnished by the list of the kings of Judah, and which cannot be estimated as much short of 200 years. Further, no one of the names in this part of the list occurs among the High priests of the period, several of whom are mentioned both in the Second Book of Chronicles and in Kings; the explanation of which seems to be that the present is not a list of high priests, but the genealogy of Jozadak or Jehozadak, whose line of descent partly coincided with the list of High priests, partly differed from it. Where it coincided, all the names are given; where it differed, some are omitted, in order (probably) to render the entire list from Phinehas a multiple of seven.

Seraiah - He was put to death by Nebuchadnezzar, 2 Kings 25:18, 2 Kings 25:21.

Jehozadak - The meaning of the name is "Jehovah is righteous." It has been noted as remarkable that the heads of both the priestly and the royal stock carried to Babylon should have had names (Zedekiah and Jehozadak) composed of the same elements, and assertive of the "justice of God," which their sufferings showed forth so signally.

So it's not just a list.... with a little digging it's a Table of Contents and a review.
